Montreal is affordable, but I don't think you can attribute that entirely to rent control. Forty years ago it was the premier city in Canada, but it's had a serious decline since then. Perhaps not an absolute decline in population

Meh. "Plunging" is a strong word for an 8% drop. Even if you buy the "effective rent" argument, 22% isn't much of a plunge. This is a start, limited to a very few neighbourhoods, and merely makes the housing market

I wouldn't blame it all on wealthy NIMBYs. There are poor, renting NIMBYs too, and they're just as much a problem.

Yes, I've noticed this too. The AWS documentation and the console both say that the changes may take a long time to apply, but in fact the database is up for most of that time. I've done several big upgrades that had only a few se

Yeah. I actually develop on a Mac and deploy on NixOS. Nix works well on both, and my builds are parameterized by system. Cross-platform dev has its issues too, but they seem easier than dealing with desktop Linux.

Yeah, there's a learning curve. No doubt about that. It does sound like nix is a good fit for your use case. You could certainly create separate environments each with a slightly different build of OpenCV. They'd share dependencie

This is why I love nix so much. Getting a dev environment set up with nix is the usual amount of hassle. The difference is that nothing ever works by accident. Therefore, once it does work, I know I've captured all the dependencies and

The nix solution is npm2nix, which runs npm against a package.json file and generates a nix expression for all the npm modules you need. This mostly works, but occasionally you need to override the generated derivations to add implicit depe

It's not just that it's impossible to capture everything in one database, it's that it's a waste of time to try. There is no format that can capture all nuances and be useful for all purposes. Data is messy. The only thi

As someone trying to hire web developers, it looks to me like Bootcamps are more like finishing school than trade school. Candidates that come out of a bootcamp have learned how to signal membership in the Silicon Valley in-group. Their res

Guix uses Guile instead of the nix expression language for defining packages. Honestly, I don't understand that choice. The main issue with nix is that is a lazy functional language and the learning curve for that is a barrier to adopt

Yeah, they're getting there. The binary package cache is a start. If it cached upstream tarballs and git revs as well as builds, it would mitigate the sort of thing the OP talks about. Nix still needs some sort of distributed trust mod

Yeah, the mode matters, but really 30 minutes is an easy commute regardless of the mode. If you were to spend, say, 90 minutes going each way, that would take its toll too. (Though there would also be benefits to getting that much exercise.

No, it wasn't misguided. It worked great, and made writing web applications so much better and easier than it had been. But Javascript has come a looong way in the last 15 years, and sophisticated web applications do a lot more client-

Yeah. Interestingly there are several threads on the nix mailing-list right now discussing how to do just this: implement a language-specific package manager, for a brand-new language, using nix. One guy is even using it to replace make.

I use nix in production, and I love it. It's just as good in practice as it is in theory. I think the problem is that really using nix involves learning a new language. And it's a weird lazy functional language at that. So yeah, t

Here here! I had several Smalltalk jobs (VisualWorks, Squeak), before going back into more mainstream stuff. Still use it for personal projects, though.
