I really like the idea, at least the stock rights part of it. The printing part feels over saturated, but the stock photography part feels like it could be done. Email me, I'd like to talk more about this.

Didn't look close, but this gem might do it: http://twitter.rubyforge.org/ In addition, there are more generic atom parsing gems that make coding quick. The great thing about ruby is the ease of making mini-dsls that make things like this

Code that runs with a purpose. Why is this not an application? I get what you're saying, but a widget is a subset of application. Widget has all attributes of application (code that runs), and then has additional attributes (limited size

Twitter moves fast enough that you probably want to re-fetch every time and display. But you're right, this is a very simple problem, just felt like rails was taking a sledge hammer to it. Not to say it isn't a cool idea, it is.

And then there's the wrinkle of trademarks. Look and Feel is certainly in the realm of trademarks, and I'm sure that 37 signals has their designs trademarked, and their logos, and "getting real", and everything else they've ever created. I

I like the calculator. Beyond simple addition, that's the second most common thing I have to calculate (finance related), and going back to excel and trying to remember the formula names is a pain. As long as it's a mode you can turn on a

What took 5 hours there? I assume it is mostly the design part and css tweaking, since the functionality is pretty damn simple (and a few lines out of a gem). I'm not being snarky, I'm curious where the time went on that project. Also, a s

There was a case where a law dictionary effectively claimed copyright over the page numbers. Since the law itself wasn't their property (and was actually public domain afaik), and there wasn't any other original content in the book, they di

Can somebody explain the outrage? Is there any incentive to being a power user on digg (beyond getting your name on the front page?). Is there any monetary incentive? SEO opportunities perhaps?

Interesting talk, although as he calls out, his ideas are reinventions of other languages. I really like ruby in the historical context of scripting languages. It's a perfect child of perl, has roots in shell scripting, and makes "normal"

The question here is rather incoherent. But the idea of interactive ads aren't old (shoot the duck, etc). Not sure how CAPTCHAs fit in this...

Do it yourself. Dreamhost + One click WP install == working wordpress. You don't even have to ever log into the terminal. Plus having your own domain name makes you look more professional.

Evaluate what you're good at and start a new company? You have run a successful company, only got screwed by the economy. You basically have 13 + 17 - 6 == 24k in debt. If you go bankrupt with the company, that drops to just 13k (assumin

Even with all it's features, Vim's direction has always been as a pure text editor. Plugins focus on making editing better, new features help with multiple windows, making modes easier, etc. Emacs is really a platform who's main use is a t

I'm not sure what you're saying here. I like Sinatra for teaching the underlying http protocol. Unlike Rails, it doesn't hide things from you, but just tries to make it cleaner and easier to write an app. I maintain that Sinatra:Rails::PH

Sorry for the formatting, I wanted to get it up. My goal with this was to connect the changelog with my previous posts about these new features (that I wrote against the development branch). Didn't expect it to get linked from here...

The explanation I always heard was that the date was the pull date. So NewsWeek was always dated as the day the next issue would come out. For monthly magazines, it's the month that the next issue will come out in.

I had the same idea for a dictionary, which I've been too lazy to execute on. You define an initial term, and it comes up with a definition. Then you can expand out from there, if you don't understand a word. Then you keep recursing until

The biggest issue with ASP.NET for me is that it ignores the underlying protocol. The writer tries explaining this away, saying that you can get at the raw http components if you want, but I don't think that matters much when the default u
