I can see how the ambiguity makes it seem like I'm saying that I think the people made this decision to directly cause pain. That's not what I meant and no I don't believe they made the decision trying to hurt people. What I

I found the writer to be downright empathetic. People make these decisions on purpose to cause their employees this much pain and you're worried about defending their feelings from a writer who is actually deploying empathy? I am so co

To address the meta question of whether you "should" do this or not I think it's worth considering the world when these choices were made. The choice used to be (essentially) ruby/python vs. c++/java. C++ and Java a

Calling it unusable seems like unnecessary hyperbole. That said, it does seem like a step backwards! Do these things get A/B'd with static signup pages? Surely they are going to lose some signups for this. Maybe they don't ca

The VB developers I knew used the exact same super high quality IDE to start learning C# and a lot of the concepts either transferred or they would have had to learn them anyway to hop to VB.NET so.. this all just feels like normal forward

What if the top comment wasn't the MOST cynical take possible at any given time? :D What is cool about HN though is that maybe an Apple engineer will show up anonymously and give us the low down about why. In my short experience at App

If you present yourself as well in person as you do in your writing it seems like you could tell the story well and people would be endeared to you. What is keeping you from these roles?

Kinda seems like if you hate it you could go back to building services really easily. No real downside to giving it a shot! Unless I'm missing another trap door it feels very reversible. :) You might even be able to return to your old

Count me as another "will buy an f-150 lightning if they will take my money but not if I have to go through a dealer". I don't know how many of us there are but I really hope enough that I never have to go to a dealer again.

Often when there are two (or more) very good tools for a single task (e.g. editing text) there breaks out a Holy War, rather than people being happy for each other to use their preferred, each excellent in their own way, option. Seems to me

Causing a bunch of pain for the user because of a theoretical thing that should be true doesn't help that thing become more true. I feel like we as a people (programmers) fall for this trap too often. Incentives have to be aligned so p

For young people at an economic disadvantage it can completely change the course of your life to work at a high tech salary for a decade. It can free you up to do the work/art/anything that you're more interested in. But yeah
