I worked with great developers at Google during my short stint there (part of the Jan 23 layoffs) but the management structure gets so thick and tangled once you get above feature teams.

LLMs don't even come close to the complexity of the human mind though. They're a pastiche of human language, a fuzzy jpeg of the Internet. The human mind is _so much more_ than a prediction machine, and incredibly complex... All t

That's just evidence of Google's decay. In no world does "Continental US" mean Canada.

You know that's a good point that I didn't consider in my comment. LLMs use 16bit floats, which is approximately the same number of values. But then you get into the nuance of spiking vs non spiking neurons etc, which to my knowle

To say there's no magic in the brain drastically *minimizes the complexity of the brain. Your brain is several orders of magnitude more complex than even the largest LLM. GPT4 has 1 trillion parameters? Big deal. Your brain has 1 quadr

The cognitive 0-day is not the way that humans act like LLMs, it's the way humans anthropomorphize LLMs. It's the blind faith that LLMs do more than they do. The illusion of emergence is fact not fiction. The cognitive biases expo

Latest research shows emergent behavior is illusory. It doesn't preclude future emergence but currently models show 0 emergent behavior. To me the most interesting aspect of LLMs is the way that they reveal cognitive 0-days in humans.

It doesn't seem like there are enough experienced software engineers, at least in certain fields. Native mobile seems to be a tight market. Getting your foot in the door is hard though. Nobody wants to hire a junior.

Another vote for Obsidian. I pay for the app even though I don't have to. Great piece of tech. I really like using it.

Social programs that take care of the poor are part of that. Affordable housing is part of that. Decency is for people who have things to lose. If you're already a "dreg" why would you behave well?

It's an absurd premise to begin with: The scale at which quantum effects propagate and are observed is radically different than the scale at which the neurons in your brain operate. The functional channels for neurons are well understo

Maybe I've just had a few bad light roasts? It seems like really light sour roasts are really trendy with additives that cover up or mesh with the taste. Cappuccino/Mocha etc. I'll keep trying it because I do quite enjoy bitt

Insert eye rolling here at LaMDA "we may never know if it's conscious" claims. What drivel. A function invocation that is static unless interacted with is very clearly not conscious, and to say otherwise is innane. I agree we

You can't keep physical dials clean by their nature. They have to connect to something, which means you have holes. Holes + aerosolized grease = sticky 100% of the time. There's no way around it. I do my best to clean under the kn

A lot of my analysis is personal and subjective based on 5yoe as a full time Android Dev. The ancient APIs is using Runnables/Handlers with Tasks more than it is using Java. The single (or reduced) Activities with many fragments will i

1. The issue here is one of failing to maintain the code, so I don't see how calling it unmaintainable is unfair 2. Google is absolutely doing a lot to prevent 3rd parties from reading your contacts and sending them to a 3rd party serv

Java vs Kotlin is a maintainability issue. The reason it's pulled isn't java vs kot: It's refusing to use the modern APIs that are required for it to function on Android 11+. My outline specifically mentions the use of illega
