One thing I've learned about the Middle East is that you have to give it a month before even considering the headlines. There isn't a single honest trustworthy media outlet out there. Everyone is partisan or tangled up in everythi

Had a friend who was out there as a charity worker to help clean up after Srebrenica. It was worse than documented publicly. Same demilitarisation failures and covering shit up in Lebabon. UN can get fucked.

Strangely I see a lot of people hitting things with the brute force hammer quite regularly rather than using calculus. Some of our financial modelling stuff was CPU bound and took seconds because someone couldn’t be bothered or didn’t know

Not a dying breed. There is just a relatively static demand. Proportionally it looks worse because the rest of the industry has grown massively. Really the problem is there are too many CS grads. There should be a software engineering degre

Professional statistician here. Not that I get to do any of that these days, bar read Significance magazine and get angry occasionally. Looking at the original blog post, it's marketing copy so there's no point in even reading it.

Depends what you do. The sudden large accumulation of layers and corporate SaaS crap in the industry since about 2001 you're right on. But those of us a bit further down the stack or before that, it's pretty useful still.

I think Tim is only kissing ass because the desk trinket is cheap and the investment will take time to materialise, probably after this presidency. And Apple will be around longer than trump will be alive. I’m sure it’s killing him as much

As someone who hangs around with academics outside the comp sci field regularly they mostly seem to have old MacBooks which are falling to bits. Not sure I’ve even seen an ARM one yet. They mostly don’t need a lot of juice and don’t want an

Yep that. I just upgraded my M1 Pro MBP to an M4 Pro MBP and I can’t tell the difference really. I’ll leave it 6 years this time.

Yeah. I've been in an A320 simulator before for a few hours. They are pretty easy to fly and land. What isn't easy is getting one in a state ready to fly and to the runway. I can fly a Cessna 172 (didn't get enough solo hours

I spent a good few hours contemplating this over the last couple of years and the only rational answer I can find is that they are, apologies for language, just complete fucking morons.

Yeah I'm with you there. Someone sent out some professional communications to me about a week ago and it was a bullet list where the bullets were emojis. And signed it with a smile. Just no. Appears a lot of people write something up t

Yeah good luck with that one. I ran a home lab for a number of years. This was a fairly extensive set up - 4 rack mount servers, UPS, ethernet switch etc with LTO backups. Did streaming, email and file storage for the whole family as well a

User retention is a more important metric. Everyone is silent there. That is directly tied to MRR, long term viability and ROI for investment. If those were positive I'd expect them to be crowing about it, but they aren't. Capacit
