I disagree with this entirely as I rather like a desk job and hammers make my hands hurt after a bit :) If you want to get paid in software don't do something utterly commoditised and popular or you're just a fungible meat flavour

If you want to learn how to solve problems with hammers, engineering is what you want to do. If you want to know how the hammer works, do mathematics or physics. If you want to get paid, do software. This is why I did an EE degree, didn

Rubbish. The sticker is still on my 14 year old washing machine. Hell I've got a 55 year old piece of electronic equipment here with the serial number sticker still on it.

This stuff really annoys me but the problem is really well solved elsewhere. When you buy an Apple product it has a number on it Axxxx and a serial number somewhere. That's all you need to identify your product to anyone. That includes

Yep. When the only tool you know is the hammer you're going to hit inappropriate things with it.

Good to hear. I will add that not everyone who writes a paper expects anyone to read a paper with that level of diligence and it can lead to some interesting outcomes for the paper authors over time. Keep up the good work is all I can say!

The bubble pops way earlier than the news comes out. You can see it in the investment companies as their analysts start heavily promoting whatever is about to pop to keep stock moving while divesting at the same time. Last thing they want i

Not OP but you're right that it's probably metal shaders as it runs on pre-RT capable iPhones. But I've tried it my spare 13 Pro. It's laggy as hell on the betas. Like really laggy. If it goes into RC/release like t

Yeah this. I'd rather we have NeXTstep back than pastel blurry glassware oblivion. I have a longing for 10.4 on my old plastic Intel iMac at this point.

Sounds like when I worked for a defence contractor in the 90s. Felt owned from the moment I woke up until I fell asleep. Didn’t feel human. Just woke up one day and thought fuck it and never went back in. Took 6 months off, went on holiday,

At best it churns out mediocre to poor code so it’ll produce mediocre to poor thinking. I wonder if some of the proponents know where the line is in the art. I suspect not.

The biggest problem with this is near zero communications from Microsoft. But what do I expect these days? Shovel AI in everything at any cost. I’ve had repeatable data loss recently from windows 11 under a specific condition copying direct

I have a colour cal 5k display. That’s not streamable in any sensible way. Nor do I want the latency or interface disparity.

Wait until you plug it into JIRA, strap copilot and actions on it. Then you can have all flavours of hell at once. Our org has ground to a halt. A lot of the time we just break the branch permissions on the repo we are using and run release

Only thing that keeps me off Linux is Lightroom and Photoshop. Nothing even remotely comparable. So it's Mac for me, but I get you.

Glad I don't have to use Word any more or Windows. Everything is in TeXShop+LaTeX for me now. Just files on the disk as it should be.

I suspect the majority of people who recommend particular x86 laptops have only had x86 laptops. There’s a lot of disparity in quality between brands and models. Apple is just off the side somewhere else.

Having used both types extensively my dell matte display diffuses the reflections so badly that you can’t see a damn thing. The one that replaced it was even worse. I’ll take the apple display any day. It’s bright enough to blast through an

Compiler is usually IO bound on windows due to NTFS and the small files in MFT and lock contention problem. If you put everything on a ReFS volume it goes a lot faster. Applies to git operations as well.

+1 for organic maps. Have used it hiking and travelling all over the world. Never had any issues with it. Not had any GPS problems other than that time I was in an area where it was being jammed. Bloody Russians.

As the owner of an M4 Pro and an Intel Ultra 7 laptop, the M4 pro is uncomfortably cold most of the time. The ultra 7 is uncomfortably hot. The Mac sucks in the winter. The PC sucks in the summer. The PC is however entirely unusable due to
