I don’t understand how people are conflating recycling and climate change. I have seen more and more of this recently. Of course, virgin plastics mean consuming more fossil fuels but beyond that the two are largely separate in my mind. Recy

Fair enough. My job involved a lot of text crunching and simple ad-hoc analysis that suited awk well. “Use it or lose it” is certainly true.

Yeah, like I said: I can see how it could be useful for someone who knows only Ruby. > I never really learned awk properly myself either It's really worth it. It's simple — pattern matches and block, BEGIN/END, hashes, mat

It's a stretch to claim this is a "migration". Facebook has used MySQL since its very early days — certainly since before Oracle acquired Sun and thus MySQL AB.

Can you explain what "energy availability" means in this context? My family lives in the UK and the lights work and the gad flows. Prices increase over time (above inflation, IIRC) but it still works, so I assume you're refer

I use chamois cream for every "serious" ride (which means anything but popping to the shops in my jeans) now. My butt used to be tougher but now I get saddle sores much more easily, particularly when riding indoors with worse vent

IMO the focus on plastics is a distraction. We'd be much better served by building buildings that last longer (I live in Switzerland and I'm surrounded by 50 year old concrete buildings being knocked down and replaced with concret

Once you need concurrency or have anything but the most basic logic almost anything trumps bash. It’s possible to implement basically anything in bash, of course, but that doesn’t make it sensible. Its error handling is poor, there are too

Deep learning/AI isn’t the solution to everything. It’s probably a lot cheaper and more reliable to pay a couple of guys to turn knobs into butterflies for 3 weeks than mess about trying to get a computers to do it effectively.

I saw a great quote recently (perhaps on HN?): "A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation." -- Gustavo Petro This is, for me, very true. I lived in the US and w

No, because that’s ridiculous. There are humans that can be cruel but I’m not saying humanity should mimic this. I’m saying that humans are much more developed than animals and can do better. Just because there are outliers that doesn’t mea

Just because other animals don’t consider the suffering of their prey isn’t an excuse for humans to do the same. Animals do what is instinctive. Humans (should) have empathy for others, including animals, and are able to make choices about

Correct me if I'm wrong but the SNMP retransmit counters are just that: a count of retransmits the host sent. Raw retransmit counts are often just a vague indication that something's up — the host is retransmiting, either because

Facebook has a similar system, unsurprisingly. An agent runs on every host to sample 1 in N packets, accumulating counts by source/dest host/cluster/service/container/port and so on before sending the aggregate data

The difference in what’s called “light” in the US and Europe is huge. The F-150 is, to me (a European), a very substantial vehicle. Its front end is the height of a medium-sized family car!
