It's more nuanced than it seems on the surface. I started with a similar opinion but I have to say there is something to be said for everyone from hairdressers on up actually having some form of relevant qualification. At least for the

I don't live in France anymore and don't have the accounts but they were big banks: Credit Agricole and Caisse D'Epargne. I've heard similar stories with Banque Populaire too. As for cheque usage, 4 years ago (when I was

As far as trades/professions are concerned, you need a degree or a certificate of some kind for virtually everything in France (from being a hairdresser all the way up to doctors/lawyers).

I don't think of myself as being _that_ old (will be turning 35 soon) but my first LAN party was done with 10BASE2 and I remember working a summer/intern job at a factory that used a token ring network... So either I'm in den

Now I've grown up and free time has become scarce, I tinker a lot less than I used to but I recently enjoyed a weekend burst of the "old times" when I offered to build a hackintosh for a friend. I'm a linux and windows g

Would be interesting to know how many of these points map over to the insurance landscape in Europe? I know next to nothing about either but, from talking with Stateside friends, have the (possibly wrong!) impression that the insurance mark

The only software you need is something that can speak the ACME protocol, which is what letsencrypt uses to receive your CSR (which you can generate yourself with openssl), issue challenge tokens and then (subject to you successfully passin

Yeah I read somewhere that they were working to try and get the CA/B rules changed to allow it (no idea if this is true). Will check out the CNAME trick - thanks!

I love letsencrypt but I wish they would hurry up with deterministic dns challenges. It would make securely automating certificate renewal vastly simpler and easier (especially for certs that are being used for non www serving endpoints e.g

An easy option is to use an offsite backup service that keeps versioned history (e.g. http://www.rsync.net or http://www.spideroak.com ). Not sure about Spideroak but in the case of rsync.net they duplicate snapshots

Sorry, misunderstood when you said "Starting an airline is not a trivial undertaking, certainly not something you could hope to complete during a temporary downturn or use "market timing" like you would with equities.".

Norwegian didn't start in 2007. They go back to the early 90's. Re: leasing. This is true of virtually all airlines these days outside of some flag carriers - I was being sloppy with my wording :) However, you get much better leas

I too am sceptical the pure LCC model will work for extended long haul routes but I think it can definitely work for medium-haul (i.e. Western Europe to Eastern/Central US). I think the legacy carriers will also have an easier time cat

This is definitely true although in Norwegian's case they also benefited from some lucky timing: the GFC happened to occur just as Boeing were developing new aircraft that would finally be capable of offering low enough ops costs for t
