The issue here seems to be that Apple have developed a reputation for producing polished "finished products" that doesn't gel particularly well with rolling out "perpetual beta" web services. I assume their hands were tied here, and there w

That's true (or may be true), but unfortunately nobody is comparing Google Maps circa 2005 to Google Maps today. They're comparing Google Maps today to Apple Maps today and finding the latter wanting.

The difference, as far as I see it, is that Pocket makes being free a selling point, whereas Instapaper users are used to paying for features. Instapaper can continue to exist without substantially shifting business models for the foreseeab

iOS 6 is not unique to the iPhone 5, so it wouldn't make sense for Gruber to review the latest version of the OS as a "feature" of the new phone. It makes sense to distinguish the hardware from the software.

Though this is oft-repeated: nothing is "free". Pocket plans to make money off you somehow, whether directly or indirectly. Instapaper is simply more up-front about how and when you will pay.

I don't think it's one or the other. Removing the trademark from these logos is low-hanging fruit - an easy way for Marissa to signal that deeper change is afoot, and to assure employees that she "gets it".

Part of me would be more impressed if somebody did this in MS Paint, instead.

To be fair, I think this is slightly different. Customers paid for a service with high uptime, and they didn't get what they paid for. That downtime likely resulted in losses (both monetary, and in terms of reputation) for many of those cus

PayPal seem to be waking up to the fact that their service is almost universally loathed by its users, and I can only hope the ramifications of this incident lead to a similar wakeup call for Go Daddy. Unfortunately, I doubt it. I suspect t

It delights me to see how much polish Stripe put on everything they do. This is a basic feature, sure, but it seems as though it's been implemented extremely well. Even their blog announcement is extremely well-designed. Stripe's attention

Exactly. It's sad that HP appears to operate by sniffing out extremely short-term opportunities instead of laying the groundwork for anything vaguely long-term. Or, rather, they lay the groundwork then rip it up, lay the groundwork then r

It's interesting that Whitman (HP's President) seems to suggest their "in" would be targeting smartphones specifically at consumers in developing countries. That's an interesting angle. It does suggest a lack of an overarching strategy, tho

I think the article's author makes the point that Apple have operated using the same evolutionary model for 30 or so years. Five years after the Mac was introduced, the latest version of the product looked similar, but was faster, more capa

Emile, first: this looks great, and congratulations! As somebody working on an online marketplace-style project in my spare time, I'd be interested to know: do you feel as though two months of sales data is enough to work out whether your g

I think you'll find that a lot of websites don't use "hard black" (#000000). There's a perception that hard black text on a hard white background is the most legible combo, but in practice this can actually appear a bit harsh to some. Even

That's interesting, and it's probably something I'll come to recognise as I spend more time here. However, from where I'm standing, it does seem as though the issue is that those ties are breaking as the community grows. I'm not totally sur

I'm relatively new to the Hacker News community, so forgive me if this is totally off-base, but in my opinion the issue is that the community feels relatively anonymous. Perhaps this is by design, the point being that the comment should be
