That might be because the Physicists had help from Mathematicians before and are just passing it on. I don't think that's quite true though, i like to believe that polymaths and university aren't quite dead in academics.

That seems to be what he says, but after the first part he disregards that as not useful. Another comment points out following the standard is good for portabilities sake. Somehow, that all seems obvious to me.

In a precise language it is obviously utterly useless to have homonyms that are not just distinct but opposed in meaning, unless one is the inferior. Of course that depends on context, because language is inherently underspecified (i think)

Well, the trick is that loss prevention is difficult in a living fast and dying young culture where everythings supplied and effort is reduced to repetitive narrow minded tasks. It should give the brain enough workout to gain some IQ points

Yes, but on another note, age-group is a murky term to deal with, because a delta t of one year is a lot of time, when development is still very fast as is obvious in weight and size gains.
