By scraping by, I mean working 60+ hours per week for those wages. Here in Switzerland we work a normal workweek (45 hours) for an average wage 2x that plus a better quality of life. Germany and London pay much less though but experienced d

This was in the 1960s. Imagine the projects being conceived now for targeting individuals and population subsets to change opinion, mood, etc. using things like social media, targeted communications, etc. The US then and now was totalitaria

Yeah! That's it. Thank you. I would bet that the sounds and smells of riding a camel across the desert in China are similar to riding a rich old fat guy in a hotel room in New York...

The voice in this article is very familiar. Is this the same author of the woman that wrote about high-worth dating in New York? Living in a hotel room with multiple women while going on dates with rich guys... I can't remember the det

Just basing my statement off of American pop history. But I do believe it. My brother was a test pilot and I've also met some true patriots in my professional work.

Part of me can understand why test pilots in the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc did what they did. American test pilots and early astronauts did it for country first (in the context of the cold war), humanity second. I have a hard time understanding wh

Yes, you're right, it's corny. Not to offend, but this is typical of HN contributors, to equate a completely mundane Experience with something much deeper and interesting and for no one to call you out on your pap. Someday once sp

Who's talking about killing or abusing animals? Only you are. I'm talking about eating eggs, butter, and for the few cultures that eat it, cheese. Even in the u.s. you can eat animal products where the animals lead healthy lives.

We're having multiple conversations here... I think western wealthy vegans don't have particularly strong morals or ethical values and are vegan for other elitist and classist reasons. I think if they were exposed to the real worl

We're talking about veganism, not vegetarianism. You obviously didn't read the link you posted. Edit: I'm responding to your recent edit. No, eating insects is not vegan. Why would you think that? Crickets and cockroaches are

On the contrary. And your comment supports my premise. You have the luxury of being vegan. I know I'm assuming, but like many wealthy westerners you probably travel to poorer parts of the world. Believe me, you were consuming animal pr

I'm surprised a Swedish prison doesn't provide a vegan diet. Prisons in California provide a number of different diets, although I'm not sure about vegan. It's a large expense for them. But that said, I think there are t

What's probably just as infuriating to some is that I notice as my wife and I get older and get higher and higher incomes and assets it becomes increasingly easy to spend less money. As an example, we just bought the company car my wif
