We're using prediction markets to improve our product, by crowdsourcing suggestions with betting. I'm a Manifold cofounder. Ask me anything!

Can't handle discussion and evidence opposing your worldview? That's the mark of a weak mind. If only we could shut down all contrary evidence to the expert consensus. That would totally lead to a better world. The truth is really

This is, unfortunately, the left's view of the undiscussable: ignorant quackery. But a real heterodox environment can foster discussion on real ways the current consensus is lacking. Like whether reopening schools last Fall was a good

The USA was founded on the idea of limited government. It was very successful! Government only gets bigger over time. Even early 20th century America had a tiny fraction of our budget and regulations today.

Thank you. Unbelievable how many people would rather no one try anything new at all. This article and the responses show the worst of HN -- bad faith attacks, no attempt to give the benefit of the doubt, no engagement with the underlying vi

+1 I don't know why you are being downvoted, I think HN's flagging system is another way we are being censored. Just this summer, I remember multiple articles with important, true contributions to our understanding of covid that g

It's upsetting that this article is flagged. Is there no room for discussion of alternative views? Censorship is not the answer. Funnily enough, it may actually harm the BLM movement. If there is no push back on protesters, they can ke

AS3 added classes and static typing on top of ECMAScript, but lost out to regular ES3 in browsers. In a surprising twist of history, AS3's ideas were rediscovered years later with a language called Typescript that among other things ad

I actually don't think the data and graphs prove their point. Millenials are young and so the appropriate comparison has to be to to other generations when they were the same age. You can throw out half their graphs based in that point

Sounds like a success. The city grew huge until an equilibrium was reached that slowed growth. With restrictive zoning, you would just have a smaller, poorer city which fewer people would have wanted to move to.

I'm truly saddened to see the reaction people are having to Sidewalk Labs' project. The current feeling in the air is to distrust and hate any project touched by a large tech company and be suspicious of any amount of data collect

Personally, I think Google would be much more competent at designing a good city than the government. Privacy fears are way overblown. It's popular right now to hate on big US companies, but this project always sounded promising to me,

It's definitely not the pattern that doing worse once snowballs inevitably into future years, at least not on average, because students' scores still always assemble in a nice bell curve. I think a better model is that you are not

That's a valid point that someone who fell behind their usual performance may also do just as bad the next year since school material is cumulative. I strongly suspect that this effect is smaller than the reversion to the mean, but you

I think there is a major flaw which you are getting at. If you take the students who performed at the 10th-25th percentile in any school in one year, on average they would do better the next year because of reversion to the mean. The way to
