When you depend on third parties for critical but not directly business related tech you are just as vulnerable to disruption as if you directly got hacked. Even huge companies with ridiculous valuations can fail to audit indirect suppliers

Our 40 years you see everything. This last employer was known for this sort of thing, yet still successful despite their best efforts to mess everything up.

Rather than look for another job I retired at 63.5. My job was long hours, high stress, high visibility, continuous deadlines and changes that never ended at a large non FAANG company. Compensation was OK (not FAANG but OK for where I am).

A lot of these articles assume the work being estimated will remain relevant during the estimated timeframe. My last (very large, not FAANG) employer started every project with a hard deadline, estimates were only used for budgeting not tim

Funny, I drank a lot of sugary soda as a kid (real sugar, not HFCS) and ate lots of candy. I still managed a long career as a programmer until last year. I wonder if there is more to this study than simply sugar consumption; perhaps its in

This small child has a better UX than many things I have been forced to implement. At least as it iterates, improvements occur that make the UX better and provide a more pleasant experience.

If I was the lawyer for the reporter I'd ask Tim Berners-Lee to testify. What a great testimony that would be.

When I was around 5-6 I wanted to know what would happen if I put a hairpin into a light socket. It seemed a reasonable experiment beforehand; after I picked myself up after flying across the room I learned a valuable lesson. Around the sam

At my last (very large but not FAANG) employer we collected huge amounts of metrics in our apps, ignored them entirely, and based everything on executive whims. Is this Whim-Driven Development?

I left Apple almost exactly a year before this, but I remember how totally horrific the Copland dev was, hundreds of engineers writing crap with hardly any coordination. It was pretty depressing to come to work because we had almost no mone

Since I started using Safari and iCloud Private Relay, hiding my IP address, this no longer works, since the IP they see changes a lot and is only vaguely in your area. I think FB etc. knows the address range of the IP that are exposed and

Children born during the pandemic are not yet in school. This research makes little sense, measuring cognitive differences of 2 year olds is highly unlikely to be meaningful.

Nothing in programming is proven since everything changes all the time. Otherwise we would still be programming in Cobol, Fortran, LISP and APL without changes from the 1950's. It's like saying tanks from WW1 were good enough to l

I worked at a company where the CIO routinely bought technologies for us to use, but we never did as they were mostly pointless to our business. He also always wrote articles for the companies bragging how much the software improved our bus

The healthcare place I worked (mid 00's) kept all the prod passwords in a text file accessible to half the company. No auditing of logins into those servers either, so who knows what was leaked.
