My wife, a green card holder, applied for citizenship in April and was naturalized yesterday (from an EU country). Not that I don’t believe it could be true but where are you getting the 3-4yr timeline? If that’s accurate she/we may h

I have the first Ultra and just looked back at the data and they were never interrupted. It isn't included in the release either. Wonder what is different about it. Did apple arrive at a separate agreement for that device?

Saw a Jet Blue plane wrapped in Peacock livery today… selling the planes themselves as billboards sure does feel like scraping the bottom of the revenue barrel.

Plenty of blue collar jobs where you could get fired or couldn't get hired because of behavior outside work like an OUI. Anything requiring a CDL, security, some retail to name a few.

I mostly agree with you. But the same is true with your employer in the US. You do something stupid outside of work like an OUI and there will likely be consequences with employment - either current or future. Not terrible to internalize th

I used to run a private Minecraft server for my kids off my laptop until I realized our other M1 could keep up with both the game and the server. Keeping it awake while closed would have been nice.

I think the format plays a huge factor too but for different reasons. This format of racing is very dependent on aerodynamic advantages - to the point that even on the massive climbs the rider on the wheel still holds the edge to someone do

I’m not sure I’ll ever understand HN aggression with certain downvotes. This is the OP from Italy and likely English is not their first language. Why is this comment so bad?

I don’t have hearing loss but the best way I’ve found to not miss important notifications is a smart watch. Game changing to ensure my wife and I don’t miss each other’s messages around school pickup or anything else important. With an appl

The first startup I worked at used IRC - well before slack etc. I hadn’t touched it since I was a teenager and think I managed to violate just about every internal channel guideline. Took me a minute to understand what “echan” meant.

Think the some of the worst of it was for people stuck in elevators. Don’t have exact numbers but there were A LOT of them. Emergency services were very busy freeing people. My wife was stuck on a train and that wasn’t so great either. Toil

My father bought one of these before I was old enough to remember. He returned at least two defective units - the tape drives - before he threw in the towel. Eventually our first computer was the Apple IIc which we still have.

El Eternauta on netflix is an Argentine sci-fi series based on an old comic recently released. It is very well done. Best series I’ve watched in a while. Avoiding any real spoilers it pretty much kicks off with an EMP frying all modern elec

Wonder what it is about these sources that compels people to pick them up put them in their pocket and surprisingly often keep them in their kitchen. Do they visibly glow or look cool?

On October 10th 2024 there was an x1.8 event and it was basically right at us. First time I’d seen the aurora - happened to be on cape cod at the time where the light pollution isn’t so bad. Was pretty amazing with the naked eye but absolut

I live in a neighborhood in Boston with a couple of big churches. The hourly bells are useful to teach the kids how to tell time. Especially when out and about. Thankfully none of the bells wake us up but I do appreciate them.

I agree with this. Without the shared experience maintaining any relationship probably requires a lot more effort and desire to maintain it.

But many non-cosmologists like me aren’t so aware. Many of us learned basic physics where the standard model is treated as a given. Or the standard if you don’t mind dad jokes.

I happen to not be a scientist but found the observation interesting given the overlapping subject matter. Especially given the stark differences in training/background. E.g. scientist/not scientist.

Reminded me of this thread from a couple of days ago. Interesting that both Riess and Gough argue there's a sociological phenomenon amongst cosmologists. Though who knows what Riess might think of the "blowtorch theory." htt

I read somewhere long ago that the biggest factor in building friendships is shared experience - like the “circumstances” you described. More important than anything else. Ones those experiences go away so does the common ground.

I’m self taught and don’t code that much but I feel like I benefit a ton from LLMs giving me specific answers to questions that would take me a lot of time to figure out with documentation and stack overflow. Or even generating snippets tha
