To be clear: I do not advocate required office time for anyone. For me I’d like to spend a week in the office with my peers in leadership and we all have a lot of ability to do that without much chaos. We also can include folks actively who

Just out of curiosity, how large of a company/companies have you been working for? I’m asking because my experience is largely with <200 people companies (more so with <50) and onboarding and such is always very scant at startup

I agree. I’m speaking personally. I cut out a three hour commute and I’m never going back, but I lead a team of twelve people and it’s important to me that I also care about their lives and careers, helping them advance and grow is importan

Ditto. I’ve been doing a lot of managery stuff during the pandemic and the main things I miss are the water cooler talk that greased a lot of wheels and filled in a lot of gaps, as well as helped new people onboard with many to many learnin

Oh I’m not at all sure and the prospect of testing these technologies is terrifying! Random: did you ever fuck around with PBXs in the early 90s?

Afghanistan doesn’t quite compare, for example a carrier group poses no threat whatsoever to Afghanistan because there is no infrastructure to destroy. In contrast one or two US carrier groups could not only offer a ridiculous level of defe

Also anecdotal, I’ve worked with about a half dozen people when they tried meat for the first time and remained unimpressed and never ate it again.

It's not as delicious to people who grow up not eating meat. I expect if we want a change it'll have to be generational.

You must never have been fired from a draining and toxic role that without the toxic part, you loved and wanted to make a career of only to get shit on and then fired and then threatened and shit on some more. Lucky. It easily took me two y

Doesn’t need to be, the company has more money than the individual, so the threat remains tangible to many.

Not sure if you listened to his explanation, but I took it to be a bit more nuanced. His main complaint is that the authors have in the past made big claims about their findings, making this in context appear that they are making the scienc

If I were to guess, it's the choice of community HNers want to engage with on a regular basis. It's not other people who live in the country, it's other nerds who live in the country, which once you leave a city starts to hav

The flip side of that is the thing is beautiful without them. I almost get it just from an aesthetic point of view, but they didn't hit the mark with their touch navigation to justify it.

Wow this looks great. Now I almost regret having the janky DE-10 Nano and SDRAM hanging off a power cable next to my TV. I love the form factor and the cases! Thanks for sharing this.

I pined over a lot of retro hardware over the past year, there are a lot of competing modern C64 and Amiga hardware, at the core of most of them are FPGAs, so if you want to save money and have a large set of options, get yourself a DE-10 N

Sometimes true, but sometimes not, it depends on how the hardware is designed to integrate with software. The Leap Motion failed miserably (my opinion) at this by expecting software to figure out where it fit as a human interface device rat

Good point. Thanks for that! I stopped reading when I saw: “Although the reported annual increase was dramatic, the total number of homicides last year – 21,570 – did not surpass some stunning totals in the early 1990s, including the nearly

Meh, comparing to the 90s peak in absolute numbers makes no sense, and seems disingenuous. 21000 murders now vs 25000 in the 90s is still half, per capita, there are about a hundred million more people here now.

The same technique works well for reheating burritos, or upleveling microwave burritos. A nice sear on each side gives a firmer structure and I think it tastes better too :)
