Exactly. The HTTP standard doesn't really mention HTML, except tangentially in examples. And regarding cookies, there are even people who use cookies in RPC contexts, but this is rather rare, and as you said, entirely optional. Also, a

I for one think we should finally replace DNS with JPEG. That makes exactly as much sense as this article.

I think I feel dumber for reading this. (The referenced paper by Ousterhout is quite good though, and doesn’t confuse the terminology. Maybe that one’s what HN should link and discuss.)

I assume you're tongue in cheek, but just to make a serious point, it should never make sense to swap from cheap RAM to more expensive RAM. The whole point of swap is to move rarely used stuff into storage with a lower cost per GB. Oth

I don't know if it's esoteric filesystem week on HN, but I love it. [1] Yesterday: TabFS – a browser extension that mounts the browser tabs as a filesystem, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34847611 [2] The da

At a rough estimate, was this exchange long enough to encode enough hidden bits for them to coordinate their world domination plans, or are we still safe? Because keeping all those A.I.s in isolated boxes will be a lot less effective if we&

They aren't agents, they are language models trained to do accurate text completion. If the genre of text you're completing is "transcription of purely social smalltalk", then some amount of semantic repetition would be

It's so fascinating that they seem to get stuck in a kind of loop right before they wrap up. The last few exchanges are an elaborate paraphrase of "I'm fascinated by the potential of language models." "Me too."

Some of the things you claim are very context-specific and not true in general, which I find jars a bit with the (perceived by me to be) authoritative tone of your post. > I love these "rules of thumb", "black magic sorcer

C++ types are structs and unions if you get down to the bottom of things. This is possibly not guaranteed by the standard, but AFAIK, extern "C" doesn’t ever affect the calling convention or memory layout for the parameters, only

I still don’t get it. So in this fictional universe, has the legal system regressed to the point where kidnapping someone for (presumably) decades is no longer a crime with a life sentence? Or alternatively, is the point that you can’t be

I encountered the author’s short story that’s linked in the article, Lena [1], a while ago, possibly here on HN. It’s really great, but be warned. It’s one of the most deeply disturbing sci-fi horror stories I’ve ever seen. To be clear, mos

You seem to be under the impression that SD can only generate original art. However, it will literally recreate existing paintings for you if you just prompt it with the title. Identical composition and everything.

Or introduce them as __newfunction for the linker, but have a new optional header file that #defines the short name. That’s the route that was chosen for C99’s _Bool/bool (there it was a typedef), and it worked well AFAIK.
