I'm not sure I fully agree with that characterization. Many people would intuitively classify assignment as a statement, yet it's an expression in C, which is fully in the Algol tradition. And Rust is certainly a descendant of C,

The year is 2023. Everyone who believes either Microsoft or Google are the good guys here is either not paying attention, or works for either of the companies (not so unlikely on Hacker News). Both companies use every imaginable dark patter

I’m no expert on the sociological aspects of this, but do claim a bit of knowledge on statistics. And when a research finding contradicts everyday experience, it’s natural to be skeptical, so I looked at the paper in a bit of detail ( https

I’m also most often on the hiring side of this. If novel problem solving is what you’re actually testing, I would agree. But too many interviewers just think they’re testing that, when what they’re actually testing is whether a candidate

Very much yes to your first sentence, but I don’t think “just plug something into ChatGPT” is a fair summary of your (very interesting) post, so you’re fine with me. I’ve seen several statements recently, including one in a talk by a Micros

It’s not intended to do that, and I don’t think that would be possible in general. Debug output can be arbitrary and ambiguous, while this is a well-defined serialization format that only happens to have a readable Rust-like syntax. Of cour

1. I 100% agree about comments. 2. I’m still not convinced it’s the file format’s job to encode every possible data type. We used to have deserialization layers for that, but for some reason, we don’t do that anymore. Nowadays we expect eve

I’m not familiar with R, but the lm(…) line looks like it’s linearly interpolating the latitude and longitude. However, that’s not what straight lines in a Mercator projection are. You might be confusing it with the cylindrical projection.

Mercator maps are conformal, which means that over small distances, shapes are preserved, though you do have to correctly adjust the distance scale. So how much does that matter over 76 km, would the bend in the line even be visible?

Sorry to ruin your pun idea, but Stein doesn't mean geometric shape. The most common meaning is simply stone, but it can also mean board game piece. Words you might use for these shapes instead would be Form (meaning shape) or Kachel (

You make it sound like you'd have to remember a 4-digit constant in either case. That's stupid, it's simply (torque * RPS * 2 * PI).

Of course these things are “observable” in the literal sense. And yet, they aren’t considered to be observable by the memory model of any language spec that I know of. Same as CPU power draw, which has been used as a side-channel to extract
