I live in America and my wife's family is from the UK. We aren't rich by any means but we bought a small house last year and when her family flew in they kept commenting on how big our house was. Our house is about as small as you

I find it cost effective to simply create a 2nd vlan at home for IOT use. It has no gateway for internet access and I can only access it from local devices or over my VPN. This way I can use inexpensive devices without the worry.

I'd counter with attempting to reclassify as non salary exempt. Most IT work isn't salary exempt and thus as I am perpetually "on call" I have to be paid for every second since I started working for you.
