Just because it's not super simple doesn't mean we should treat federation as a dead end. Sandstorm is one way for non-admins to have their own server and there's work regarding self-hosting everything. It's unsexy, it&#

It works in an unrestricted Chrome instance. I wonder if there's a Google docs downloader script that directly gives me the PDF without dealing with the wonky website.

Speaking of SMF, it's interesting that the seemingly little effort to recreate it led to systemd, while nobody attempts to create a read/write implementation of ZFS. I mean, if you can accept the license of ZFS (huge piece of code

They want to control it all to give the best possible user experience but fail short and introduce bugs I've never had since the first day I've installed Linux in the 90s.

There's also systemd's constant regressions and awkward interfaces and limited functionality when they replace existing solutions. It should have stopped at unifying init scripts, although upstart had that, SMF had it, so it'

The emacsrocks videos existed before the website refresh and weren't created for gnu.org, but I can imagine Richard asking for new videos to advertise the GNU platform instead.

I don't doubt that there is a big problem at agencies like DOD or NSA, but doesn't the plan sound like an excuse to legalize hacking into everyone's computers?

As long as control software in cars is held to the same quality standard as that found in planes, I don't mind OTA updates. If it isn't, the risk of critical regressions will be high. I believe before long we'll have an FDA-l

This may have been true in the past, but when consoles require an internet connection to function, it's a small step to turning it into a dead, black box. Even if it provides an offline mode, it will usually require a periodical sync w

If you accept that modern cars, like game consoles or tractors, do not belong to the buyer anymore as they used because of the impossibility of maintaining them, we can start treating vehicles as leased exclusive-use transportation devices.

I don't understand what you're saying. I suggested that linux builds of rust+cargo ought to be done as musl-static (not for targeting musl) so that a single download works on both Ubuntu and Alpine. Now we have only glibc builds.

It wasn't enterprise, but the company is nice to the community otherwise, so I don't want to name them here. They just didn't seem to have single-developer target as part of their sales process.

If the official rust+cargo was built statically with musl, then a single download would work on glibc and musl distros. Right now, we don't have a download that works on musl, and one has to bootstrap on a glibc system, targeting musl,

Well, the Intel DRM driver is pretty closely tracking linux upstream and most desktop stuff just works, so you could say it's a viable alternative. But it doesn't have DTrace or ZFS, although it has LUKS/dm-crypt for compatib

Replacing logic with emotions or beliefs is one of the biggest flaws in law making around the world. Not much has changed in that regard except that we've accepted more scientific facts into our lives since the days of witch hunts. But

Right, and if the binary toolchains would be built with musl (not targeting musl) statically, we could have a rustc+cargo that works on both glibc and musl, avoiding two versions.

I like Nix-style caches myself, but a gc-cache command is needed in order to clean up only the stuff that isn't referenced anymore. I hope that's a design consideration.
