I have a dead simple method. If I'm hungry I drink water. If I'm still hungry after I drank water then I eat a modest amount of what I fancy. Most of the time this will end up being something I need rather than something I want wh

In this case I suspect it was inefficient algorithms by me. To be fair it went like lightning (400fps) until I added textures as it was just drawing vertical lines before then.

I can't remember how exactly I did it but the entire thing was written to a surface in a massive for loop per-pixel (C was used) and then flipped.

I built a 2.5D engine back in about 2006 with SDL and C on OSX. It worked (eventually) and taught me a lot. It wasn't particularly clever but had collision detection and textures, the latter stolen from Wolf 3D of course. It's a v

Thanks for the info. I'm working on a hardware startup at the moment so I need to concentrate on that first :)

From experience you want to get them used to noise rather then keeping things quiet. With the first child, I made the mistake of hanging out of the window at 10PM trying to get the attention of the pizza guy so he didn't ring the door

I built exactly the same system just over 13 years ago. I'd love to be doing that now as the technology wasn't really there back then. GPRS and windows mobile was all there was. You're right. It sounds boring but it was great

I've just given up on my X201 which is 6 years old. I maintained it just with a #00 Philips driver! It still worked - just fancied a new unit. Now I have a T440 and it's exactly the same when it comes to maintenance.

This is sensible. Also the established TLDs seem to have a larger clue stick. Look at the recent .io domain shenanigans: https://thehackerblog.com/the-io-error-taking-control-of-all...

Yet. Some of the traditional apps we host are vulnerable hypervisor failure be that rack, DC or region.

This does worry me. If there is a shortage of resources suddenly or a DC fire that takes out a region, then what? We have contingency against this via our own infrastructure but I worry about organisations who don't have any.

Fair points and I agree with all of them. One killer for me is entirely disparate from yours and that it is pretty damn difficult to drive macOS from the keyboard.

Gnome is just total garbage as is windows 10. They both drove me to OSX which I admit merely carries the crown of being "the least crap". I really want gnome2 back but fixed and as a first class citizen, not a fork that the big ve

All the cheap ones I've had that blew up were either an SMD resistor blowing out or one of the LEDs blowing out. When the LEDs blow out if you peel the board off the heatsink you will always find a missing bit of goop under the LED tha

I don't think they leave out capacitors. The typical Mylar units they use are cheap. They only put enough capacity in to get them out of the door.

Apart from the waste. We really don't know what to do about it other than bury it and leave it for a few tens to hundreds of generations in the future to deal with with the hope that they will know what to do. So it's the safest o

100% agree with you. No one accounts for portability. The common mantra is that if portability becomes a problem you will be rolling in VC cash so you can just afford to restart everything from scratch and shrug it off. Basically defer the

Yes 100% free of flicker. I actually measured modulation technically speaking so even brightness modulation of a small amount would have been picked up. Same experience with the Philips bulbs here.

Yes fan out is ~25 as opposed to ~10. Early TTL is still used for building oscillators, timing circuits and monostables because lots of long run products were designed with those in and the LS/HC parts aren't equivalent due to bia

It's not quite that. The cheap ones use white LEDs which are basically phosphor doped blue LEDs. They have a distinct blue peak which is far brighter than the overall output. The more expensive ones use blue LEDs with separate phosphor
