I definitely feel that stress about living in a high COL area. The very large rent/mortgage is always looming. Even if you have a good emergency fund you’ll burn through a ton of money if it takes a while to find a new job should you l

From what I understand, the employee loses leverage. If you don’t like the lower salary, often your only option is another company in your area that will also pay an equivalently low salary. Hopefully if enough companies start hiring remote

Being the only remote person on a team is really hard. I’ve both done it and been on teams where someone else does it. It’s less than ideal for everyone. It’s a constant nag that never goes away (oh did you remember to join the hangout for

I am moving from San Jose to Michigan on Saturday. My company has allowed me to continue working remotely. I know of a few others doing the same.

I’m a huge TS fan and I agree. Deno is just running tsc for me it seems. So far I don’t see much advantage. It also potentially ties Deno to current trends. TS is pretty dang popular, but what if something else comes along and scoops it?

If Twitter’s move is a sign of things to come, the “potential market” you’re talking about can become quite large.

There are successful, fully remote, companies, such as Automattic (Wordpress), Gitlab and more. If they can figure it out, seems more companies can as well.

It's very easy to download the copyrighted content. For example, here is a full NES ROM set: https://archive.org/details/NESrompack

That doesn't seem to stop Nintendo from shutting down ROM sites left and right. For example, emuparadise has complied and taken down all ROMs: https://www.emuparadise.me/emuparadise-changing.php But here is a complete

They have lots of copyrighted content. Such as virtually every commercial retro video game ever made it seems. I personally think it’s great but surely companies aren’t too pleased? How does archive.org avoid being sued into oblivion?

I could (and heck, probably should). But I don't browse websites all that often on the vpn. Just on the occasion that I do, I'm blown away at all the ads :) So just lazy.

I’m reminded almost every day that I have a pi-hole since it is not my dns provider when on my company’s vpn. It’s absolutely night and day on so much of the web. Some sites have so many ads now it’s just shocking to be frank.

You can navigate to the admin console (easily done on any machine on your network) and disable it for a certain amount of time very easily https://i.imgur.com/K6VgV2G.png Note this is from pihole 4.3, but I can't image

I've lived in the Bay area for the past 5 years and am leaving in a week. But one reason for leaving is because business is so wildly successful here that it's very crowded, stressful, and income disparity is massive. Which seems

To add to that, rebase and generally "clean" your commits before pushing them out. A repo that has no "oops, typo" type commits in it is just so much more pleasant to navigate.

Maybe my choice of the word "comfortable" was incorrect (although I would say "grok" was a spot on word choice in this context). It took me a good while to get the point where no matter what I encounter in TS, I feel pre

The biggest boost in productivity I've had in recent years is switching back to a statically typed language. TypeScript in my case. You can absolutely refactor and change course _so_ much quicker and with virtually no regressions at al

I've wondered the same thing. The amount of annoyance, tedium and drop in people's focus and flow clicking these things over and over and over again has to really add up.

I think that is true, especially for H1B sites since that is US specific. But I would say comparing inaccurate data is worse than not comparing data at all.

Overall I think hooks are a fine addition to the React toolbox. But I think they are very easy to overuse and the complexity of hooks seems to increase exponentially. I've been involved in two code bases now where hooks are just everyw

A big problem with `this` is it is mutable. Dan Abramov has a nice article[1] explaining why that is a problem and how it leads to subtle bugs that are common in React apps. Hooks eliminate this problem, and I would guess this was one reaso

I agree with that. I have no idea why it’s in a separate package. But I can say that about many packages :). It’s possible to just treat everything as a promise by wrapping results in Promise.resolve() but that can have performance implicat
