You need to do this test if you are creating a promise implementation. That was my point, there is a reason code like this exists.

Promises were not always part of the standard and for many years were implemented in user space, by many different implementations. Using duck typing like this was the only way to allow packages to interact with each other, as requiring an

This function is most likely an artifact of before promises got standardized. One way promises took off and became so ubiquitous is different implementations could interop seamlessly. And the reason for that is a promise was defined as

Did you read the whole article? I didn’t get the impression Joel took any stance. It felt more like “look this is how it is, and here’s why.”

ChromeOS is a great demonstration of this. A polished, solid, very good desktop experience based on Linux because a large company has a vested interest in its success.

Linus Torvald’s biography, Just For Fun, is a great read. I liked that it’s both the history of Linux and also showcases his personality and how he thinks.

I feel the distinction these days is pretty blurry. Tesla writes a lot of software and hires a lot of engineers. I personally know of several people who left FAANG jobs to join Tesla.

This is really great! It's easy to use, intuitive, and overall just really well done. Small heads up, there are many dead scrollbars: https://i.imgur.com/FImuHVn.png If you are developing on OSX, I recommend turning on

I totally agree and for the most part really dislike Twitter. I feel its format really encourages _very_ bad communication and does a lot of harm. But, I think the reason people do this is because it will hook more people. You've alrea

I feel like my Oura is pretty accurate. The fact it's a ring makes it very comfortable for sleeping, no issues at all. FWIW, my sleep doctor says Oura rings are not accurate at all, but anecdotally I don't agree with him. I do fin

My argument is that component isn't needed. The article is basically proposing Parent -> Stack -> Children. I argue the parent should own both its parent roles and the layout roles. The Stack component adds an unnecessary layer I

Margin is usually added in response to nearby elements. Making assumptions about nearby elements is what makes components hard to reuse.

Why not let the parent lay its children out? In my experience, a lot of engineers resort to things like spacer components due to not being very good at css. Flex, grid and even table layout should give just about everything needed for all b

The writing has been on the wall for GameStop for quite some time. Amazon and digital sales have made them pretty irrelevant and not much can be done. Just how capitalism goes.

This is a similar argument between say your own server farm and AWS. Consoles are guaranteed to work correctly and always have 100% compatibility. You don't tinker or deal with any headaches, you just play. For many people, that is wor

I believe the badge options are Mac specific. I am on Ubuntu and talking with some Mac users just now they don't have the problem I have. On Ubuntu, there is no way (at least that I can tell), to disable the blue dot on new message. Th

I am an engineer (ie, IC), and I currently have about 8-12 meetings per week. At my worst I've had over 20 meetings in a week, and in a previous position (but same company), I had about 15 meetings per week. A decent chunk of these mee

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I suppose having the code in a personal repo gives the repo owner more power? I've never founded a startup, so not sure how typical cofounder trust dynamics are.

It wasn't always like this. MacOS about circa system 7 through 9 were excellent UX-wise. OSX has been a slow, gradual degradation of UX over the past decade or so.

I'm reading through the docs now. They are pretty good! I assume I could just use say Apollo on the client? Maybe that part of the docs could use some additional info.
