So far, i've just been putting my apps on the app store with no promotion. It's going alright, making ~$100/day. For my next app, since i'm putting a bit more effort into it, so i'm going to match that with more effort into promoting it too

I can totally relate to this article: as a frequent launcher of iOS apps, i'm always open to suggestions for how to promote them. At the moment my (admittedly very vanilla) strategy is: * Set up a promo-page at www.blahapp.com * Use adwords

You're under pressure. Stay there - it's right where you're meant to be. This pressure will either crush you, or change your character from coal into diamond. Remember, even if your friends are dicks and your dad is abusive, you've got doze

My first thought when reading was 'wow, he must be confident about how open to criticism the bosses at google are, to be posting this'. And now i've come back a few hours later to find his post has been removed... Let's hope he was right wh

First cab off the rank is affordable laser cutting. I've got several projects i'd love to do once that becomes feasible. Then CNC mills, and 3d printing... the future is bright!

Well, at the moment i can't pin it down to EC2, but it's the only thing i can imagine it'd be. The network/cpu/memory usage is all healthy, and there's nothing in the kernel log, so that's what i'm guessing is the cause. Although i may be w

They beat me to it! I've only gotten to 500k on EC2, however i believe there's some trickery in their firewalls / NAT which is holding me back... If anyone's interested in the gory details, see: http://splinter.com.au/tag/comet

Thanks for your brutal honesty. It's difficult, but that's why its valuable. Build your character, it'll serve you well. Overlap your skills when learning new stuff: Eg it seems you're great at photography, so make a simple rails photo slid

You're spot on. I think a lot of people can't wrap their head around node: It's all about scaling horizontally (lots of processes, many servers) rather than vertically (one process with lots of threads on one big server). Once you realise t

I find it really hard, because nobody in this career has kids! Very few have wives, i have a suspicion that most are single. So when you put family first, it really is a culture clash. My solution is to try and become self employed. I hope

If you were approaching me, a dozen 'letter of intents' as described above would certainly grab my attention. It proves 3 things: * You're serious * You're a good salesman * There's a market for your idea

You're welcome - i really hope you get something out of reading through the source. I used to be a ruby guy before this too, so i think you should find the transition not too difficult. Good luck.

Here's my advice, on a slightly different note to the others: Learn how to make iOS apps, and make a dozen or so of them (obviously, make them smallish apps). Charge $1 each, and have a free/lite version of each app too. This will teach you

Keep in mind that the guys at rovio made 51 other games before they came up with the hit that was angry birds. The lesson is to keep trying until you have a hit :) I've got 6 apps out there, and for the life of me i can't pinpoint which one
