Chains like McDonald's do in fact waste large quantities of food (in absolute terms). I think this is largely caused by the even larger quantities they sell. But to a certain degree it is down to completely artificial and arguably poin

Where in my comment did you read the word subsidies? I was talking about the idea of internalizing "external costs" which I think is impractical and also somewhat impossible because at least some external costs do not occur at the

I am not a big fan of this "external cost" talking point. For instance, the health cost do not scale linearly with sales. Why should someone who eats a healthy amount of meat subsidize the health cost of someone who eats an unheal

Wow. 275g per day is a huge average. Do you happen to know the median? I cannot agree with the cheese part, though. I think if you replace half of that meat consumption with cheese, it would be net positive for your health and the climate.

If I am not completely mistaken, if you produce a dynamic library with rust, you are limited to the C-ABI. For instance, you cannot import a polymorphic function from a dynamic library.

You are right on track here. The complexity is real, but so are the benefits of a modular executable vs. a huge monolith. I fully understand why languages like rust demand static linking (their compilation model doesn't allow dynamic l

Yeah, more density, because all that matters is the size of cities and their economy. 90% of children never waking up to the sounds of birds around their house? Who cares? 90% of grownups never plant even a tomatoes? What does it matter! Fa

Some men decide to behave like wild bears, it seems. So while it indeed doesn't change anything about the responsibility, it is still a good idea to take steps that could prevent becoming a victim in the first place.

Responsibility is the wrong word. There is a difference between good advice and victim blaming. Just because the victim was careless doesn't make them in any form responsible for the crime. Nevertheless, I would certainly advise my dau

If Williams outsourced their CFD with that leak, they might gain an unduly advantage over teams like Haas or Alfa. These teams compete over several millions in price money.

The author is talking about databases, not programming languages. I do see a different issue, though: The article indeed seems to make no distinction between an absent value and a default timestamp of 0. That limits your database to more or

How so? That is really non-obvious to me. If site A associates user X with IDs 1,2, and 3 over three weeks, how does that help site B that only sees the IDs? When B sees ID 3, without any further unique identifier, they won't know that

CPS is a tool in the box of language theorists and compiler authors (although I don't know if any non-prototype actually uses CPS). IIRC it is mostly a convenient alternative to SSA. So yes, a compiler can transform your code into CPS
