A buffer per directory is just the right thing for dired to do, for the same kind of reason that it is right that git has a staging area. Your problem is that this behaviour causes friction with how you prefer to manage buffers. Some sugges

This comment is very far from the mark: it would be closer to the truth to say the article is mostly complaining about lack of tools to help ameliorate problems caused by the architecture. The author clearly likes Postgres and ends the piec

I guess the reason is that Julia's type system and standard libraries really guide users to use types that the JIT can unbox as far as possible.

Julia is the first language to really show that multiple dispatch can be efficient in performance-critical code, but I'm not really sure why: JIT concepts were certainly familiar to implementors of Common Lisp and Dylan.

In journalism, things like price/earnings are usually given dimensionlessly, even in quality newspapers like the FT. E.g., Tesla was a red-hot stock even before the coronavirus crisis, boasting a forward price/earnings ratio

The dimensionless %age terminology is misleading (hence the Kalecki quote) but I agree standard: it would make the difference in kind clearer to give this in terms of time, say days, but I am not going to object every time I see this. But t

If you restrict it to abductions, the picture is less rosy: around 1 in 6 abductions are non-family abductions. The stand-out statistic is over 90% of missing children are runaways. Working on this risk, reducing the chance that your kids w

This argument is very flawed, I'll pick on just one point. The main users of Tether are generally people who find it difficult to use conventional finance, so in the event confidence in USDT collapses, a lot of holders will be unable t

CLOS is about generics, so is about the type system, and is in practice pretty much orthogonal to purity. CLOS was originally implemented using macros, which are semantically pure. CLisp supports but, unlike Scheme, does not really encourag

The type annotation story is indeed better with Julia, but having type annotations for NumPy is beneficial for many users for whom Julia isn't a win, where number crunching isn't the main thing going on and Python's better li
