I promoted this article not because I think that he's correct, but because I think this article is a brilliant example of a highly intelligent person getting something dead 180° wrong. Ebert is obviously quite intelligent, and a damn fine w

I agree wholeheartedly save for that I would have picked other examples for good suspenseful games, such as Silent Hill or Parasite Eve. More recently, I would add Heavy Rain to that list, though it's a completely different genre-- I've sel

Yes, and if your "ballot" had only had those two options, I would hope that you choose the former, as horrendous as it is. What's really objectionable, though, is that the political system in the US effectively presents you with a narrow se

No extensive footnoting is needed for saying that the sky is blue. The evidence of Palin's incompetence is easily available to anyone with an actual interest.

You almost had a point here, but your unfortunate choice of terms demonstrates a lot of what's wrong with US politics. Rather than referring to the pro-choice movement as such, you've adopted a label, pro-abortion, that is simply misleading

That's part of the whole motivation for mixed economic policies in the first place-- to correct market failures. Monopolies, trusts and other such anti-competitive behavior can undermine any good that comes out of the free market, to say no

In some sense, the shift in debate came as soon as DRM became acceptable to most people. Apple has capitalized on this shifted ground, to be sure, but I think that the iPad debates are reflective of a much more general struggle and debate.

I'm of very mixed minds about this idea, but I'm glad to see it being put out there for discussion and development. I kind of get the feeling that something like this will happen anyway, and so starting a dialogue now is a great idea.

They should, or else they'll lose developers to a platform run by a company that does.

That may certainly be true, but what I was referring to is the behavior of Google as a whole company, under the influence of shareholders as well. I have a lot of respect for Page and Brin, and don't mean to malign them at all.

This cannot be emphasized enough-- Google does not want a future where their entire business model can be effectively turned off by another company. This is why they fight for openness in platforms, and for net neutrality. For Google, playi

If they actually had a coherent policy position to disagree with, that'd be one thing. I will happily be dismissive of a group that has no coherent stance on any issue. That's not being dismissive of disagreement, that's being dismissive of

Given that "teabaggers" is a moniker that the Tea Party adopted for themselves, it's not "tarring" anyone. Moreover, the Tea Party astroturf group clearly does not command anywhere near half of a country. I don't think that neonfunk in any

How is it good for users? The quality argument is bunk, and the net effect of these new rules is to restrict choice for developers. When developer choice is restricted, does that not also restrict choice for users?

This is a good demonstration of why the whole "private APIs" distinction is harmful. It allows Apple to continually be several steps ahead in application development, and it also makes the already capricious and arbitrary App Store approval

I agree, but that's a different problem. Consumers need to get angry with carriers and manufacturers that drop the device at the first sign of obsolescence. That carriers are jerks says nothing about the platform itself, but rather that Goo

I've tried replacing parts inside Apple devices before, and they're not built for that generally. Does Apple go so far as to embed "booby traps" like those seen in the PlayStation 2 which attempt to punish people who self-repair by breaking

No one is trying to say that it's anything like a religion. Rather, the statements being made are about the long-term effects on the consumer. For instance, we are getting scarily close to Stallman's Right To Read scenario. As long as close

I must second this. I use Locale on my ADP1 (better known as the G1), and it's one of the most impressive things I've ever seen on a phone. I never have to worry again with my cell going off in class, as it knows when my classes are and whe
