My programming teacher was a math teacher who'd never programmed before. This doesn't seem to be unusual.

I don't really think there's anything that can or should be done about this. It feels like saying Spanish is great for Spanish speakers but it's opaque to everyone else.

Recursion isn't really hard once you get used to it, and often leads to shorter/cleaner code. Map/filter/reduce are themselves very clearly expressed using recursion.

The vast majority of your code probably isn't manipulating state, or doesn't need to be. You can have well defined boundaries where you're dealing with state. Read from the database, pass those values through a bunch of pur

I'm fully in the vim camp. I think vim is a way better text editor and non-modal editing is terrible, but vim is must less extensible and vimscript is trash. Emacs + evil would be perfect if it didn't mean having to rewrite all t

Yeah, it always feels like what you're looking at is out of date and/or abandoned. The actual couchdb site looks nice though: http://couchdb.apache.org/

Interesting, I honestly was pretty confident no one who got used to modal editing ever wanted to go back to crazy key chording.

Just for the record, Clojure has a good system for managing mutable state when you need it, of course has java interop so there's nothing from stopping you from mutating java objects. Edit: Here's a guys experiences from making a
