Any book written by Charles Petzold is an enjoyable read, though particularly the non-MS specific titles Code and The Annotated Turing. Java Concurrency in Practice (2006) is older but relevant and clearly describes concurrency on the JVM.

The PDF is from 2006 and contains 231 pages. The printed book is from 2012 and contains 670 pages (including index). I bought a used copy of the book from Amazon for $27.
