I agree Perl is great for everything listed except: sub function_name { my ($var1,$var2..) = @_; } I know why methods are like that, but it doesn't make me any less unhappy to have to read a function in order to fi

I look forward to the job postings. I always try to see how many cliches can be put into one job posting. This one didn't have too many. At minimum they need to add something about partying hard. Anyone up for "HN Job Posting" bingo? I thin

I think the hack is jeans + (t-)shirt + blazer look. I haven't had the context to try it, but it's supposed to be a bit more "trendy" than a suit.

I think that you may see this trend because of how recently computers became prevalent. As a result, the situation is more based on leadership skills rather than other factors (wealth, heritage, etc). I think in 30-40 years we may see a shi

I'd just like to point out, if you pre-order via steveblank.com (using Amazon) you get charged full price, and pre-order via Amazon gets you a reduced price. I don't know if it will get updated when it ships. I didn't notice this until I cl

I'm in Austin, but I moved here just recently so I wasn't around for the last SXSW. As far as active HN community, there was a thread about it ages ago, but nothing ever happened ( http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3221674 ). It stands to

I would suggest to charge what you need to cover expenses. Nothing worse than a freemium service that has to close or everyone starts to hate because they took away the free. I think you have to ask these groups how they would rather pay.

You could try looking for a larger netbook, those had fairly decent battery life, and you could trade out batteries. However, the screen probably won't be as nice. You could also look at Ultrabooks (similar to the Air), but they'll have the

My last job hosted an XMPP server, and we also had a locally hosted pastebin. On the XMPP server we hosted chatrooms, so the IT people would hang out in one, and the software devs in another. What I use right now is Microsoft Lync (aka Comm

This is true. Patio11 has Halloween Bingo Card Creator, so why not "SecretSanta" themed gift buffer? Nothing says that the recipients of the gifts can't know each other offline, but the gift giving process is what needs to be anonymous.
