While all the work to bring things to Javascript is nice I'm not sure that everything needs to be wrapped in Javascript. I guess someone could argue that people who do web design know Javascript so this would let them create tests easier

I don't think that is what you would want to do with this. It is really made for automated testing with specific browsers.

This is an interesting experiment and should hopefully encourage other people to do the same. I wonder if it will push people to think about breaking webkit out of the browser for certain uses. It would be interesting to see something like

I think it is that simple. You don't build your startup solely on a free service that someone else has complete control of.

The easy answer to this is to just stop developing for their platform.

Even if you aren't interested in using Heroku this is a good read. I hadn't seen the mix of technologies referred to as polyglot persistence before but it sounds appropriate.

The security issue isn't all FUD. There are legitimate reason that you may not want to use a cloud like EC2 for certain things. Remember, you don't control the hardware for EC2. Some could modify the system so that all security measures y

That has been available since they introduce the live streaming. It really depends on how many segments the live stream tracks. The more it tracks the longer you can pause.

VLC supports playback already at least on Linux. I believe Microsoft is just using the same name to describe what they are doing in SilverLight but it isn't based on Apple's spec. I'm sure this has a lot to do with the broadcasters supporti

This project seems interesting but the github repo seems to be missing the kernel part. That or the documentation and blog post are incorrect. Hopefully someone will be able to provide a little more information about using it so others can

Something missing from the cost calculation in this article is the cost of bandwidth used for each VM. The VM itself may be low cost but at 100Mbps you will use about 1TB of bandwidth a day. You would need to select your VM provider with th

Flash Builder, Flex, AIR, Cold Fusion and JRun are all Java based. If Oracle were to do with Java what Apple did with the iPhone and close off any third party tools Adobe could be in rough shape. It is hard to imagine that happening but Ora

This makes me think Adobe is starting to sweat a little about their reliance on Java. It underlies a good portion of their tools.

It looks like I wasn't remembering the Youtube announcement correctly. I was thinking of this: http://googlereader.blogspot.com/2010/05/little-bit-of-polis... I believe that just says they are letting video and audio tags through. When th

The last time I tried it wouldn't work on a Mac. It seemed to require a very recent version of Silverlight and it acted like it was going to do something then gave me a bunch of blank boxes.

I agree they aren't that far behind but it is frustrating that they have taken a while to do it. The reason I say frustrating is because I use Google reader on an iPhone/iPad and if the feed includes a Youtube video it gets pulled in as htm

Site Explorer going away is going to make people sad too. I wonder how many non-pc users are going to be frustrated by the Bing webmaster tools requiring silverlight.

It seems like it is about time Vimeo did this although right now there is no indication that they actually have. The RRW story doesn't link to anything that has the announcement from them and there is nothing on the Vimeo site about it eith

Until there is an actual code drop for the OpenStack compute I'll see this all as hype.

That type of protection wouldn't extend past Microsoft however so I would imagine this would still be an issue in the case of Google.

Maybe I'm not typical but I don't see dups from other channels that are also in reader all that often so I'm not sure I would find this service very useful. I don't think it solves the stated problem of missing interesting articles either,

This post strikes me as not really about Ruby but about software development in general and specifically developing web apps. There isn't much insight here, of course it is hard and the language and framework don't matter much.

I'm not sure what the point of this is. I can get 1000 resumes and 10 geeks in a week advertising on hotjobs but in the end it is the quality of the person that matters. I would rather see the result of this a year from now.

You can see this in the 1M connection test done here: http://www.metabrew.com/article/a-million-user-comet-applica... Look at the "Turning it up to 1 Million" section where he details the need to use 17 IPs for the client side.

Now that EC2 has support for PV-Grub you can almost run FreeBSD there. It would seem the insistence of FreeBSD to be booted from the loader is going to make it hard to run there.

It probably depends on the datacenter environment and the quality of machine you are buying. I'm not talking about logging on to godaddy and asking for 75 random dedicated servers. I'm talking about going to Dell and buying 75 machines and

You probably had a bad dedicated server deal. I think you could get 75 of Dell R410s with 8 cores each and 16G of memory for under $300k. A top of the line colo will run you about $2k a month for a rack and a half with power and room to run

I think that statement is just an indication that they aren't recognizing the WebM content type yet in the video tag. I have tested this version of the preview with WebM Directshow installed and it indeed doesn't work yet.
