String views were a solid addition to C++. Still underutilized. It does not matter which language you are using when you make thousands of tiny memory allocations during parsing. https://en.cppreference.com/w/cpp/s

Not a specialist, just from what I heard: There are two things that make it work. First they are not really "independent" like the title says. They sync with the grid frequency. If the grid is down they shut off for safety. The ot

I get the feeling. The 90s in particular, maybe even until crysis went super fast. Then tech felt incredibly stagnant for over a decade. But the time since 2020 feels much faster again. It's scary! But it's exciting.

For your linux distro needs, debian still provides the base iso and you can make a second disk with packages you need and apt-offline.

I travel a lot and do the same. Yes most places have internet. But I don't need much. And it's easier to have an "offline" folder with docs you need compared to carrying around a satellite dish. Also works in an airplane

Great video. I think both ega and vga look good, depending on the scene (I prefer ega backgrounds but vga close up). The music however, floppy is best and the cd version is the worst. I played with the internal speaker myself. The cd music

I feel there is a conflict of interest here.. I'm split between: Yes! At last something to get CF protected sites! And: Uh! Now the internet is successfully centralized.

Pgvector is definitely the easiest way to get started. I did not really get the problem the article was trying to sell. Setting up an ingestion pipeline to your existing db, vs ingesting into yet another db seems to not solve a problem I ha

So I see two sides. On one hand some jobs with human element are safe, at first. Think of artists being made obsolete by the camera. Portrait artists became mostly obsolete, but we still pay for art. It's the story behind the art that

Something similar is easy with docker. Build the image when releasing to your first stage env, deploy the very same image to the next stage, until it reaches production. Nothing can break in between and enough time to test.

I speak multiple languages fluently and people are always surprised when I share that my vocabulary is seriously limited. I learned it is an advantage. I am forced to use simple words to explain. On the opposite end: I had a coworker, I onl

I preach to everyone to fail as loudly as possible and as fast as possible. Don't try to "fix" unknown errors in code. It often catches fresh graduates off guard. If you fail very loud and fast most issues will be found asap

Maybe the phone market is still in its golden age? It's a wonder you can get the best phone in the world for only a little over $1000. And everyone can buy it. Online without a line. Comparing with luxury watches which cost a magnitude

Well it fits into the news this month: UT2004 got its latest patch, Diablo 2 got a new expansion. Why not connect a 2003 iBook to download the latest updates?

The GameBoy Advance could run 2D games (and some 3D demos) on 2 AA batteries for 16 hours. I wonder if we could get something more efficient with modern tech? It seems research made things faster but more power hungry. We compensate with be

I use M-disc and I am sure the discs will stay safe for a long time. What I worry about are the drives! It seems the business of making drives is not profitable. So companies exit or reduce.

Would love to be able to change to a transit map. The map display is in "car mode", which makes it hard to use. There is no rail diaplay at all. In apple and google maps I normally use the transit mode. Worried it gives the wrong

Steam developing proton was what made it possible for me to change fully. No dual boot or anything needed. It's great. Funnily I also run GoG games through steam proton.. But looking forward to the GoG client working!

For finance, I find interesting the other way around. You see many fire types preparing TOO MUCH. Obviously you should not live paycheck to paycheck. But if you prepare for a 3% return fire, wasting years, your chance of dying early is the
