I don't know that it makes sense to isolate just the narrow concept of deep fake creation. It seems like fundamentally a lot (most?) of the breakthroughs that make creation of deep fakes possible are the same ideas that make possible t

Yes, it definitely is. There are obviously a lot of factors, and scarcity of engineering talent is a big one that makes it all possible. But the reason these numbers are so astronomically high, as in significantly higher than these same com

The idea of having more purpose at startups sounds nice but really doesn’t add up to me. If you’re talking about the first employee at the company, even the first ~5 engineers, then yeah I buy it. The work is very different and there’s a lo

How much equity is enough to make sense though? Why is the current status quo not enough but 2x of it is? Ata series B startup, 2xing grants might mean typical equity compensation is worth $50k over 4 years instead of $25k (at the companies

This is just anecdotal, but I’ve found yellow cabs in SF in the past 4 years to be some of the worst cab experiences I’ve had anywhere. Drivers saying things that make me really uncomfortable, or seeming a little unstable, also driving more

I like a lot of the other comments here about other countries and situations where you can hire full time staff to take care of you. But you can really have a similar lifestyle in any big city in the US on a mid-level tech salary. It’s not

What false promises? Many of them graduate and are getting real jobs. One of the fastest growing new boot camps even lets people attend for free and makes back their money as a percentage of future salaries earned. Nothing could be further

Eh, not true in my experience. Especially not the getting worse every year part. Things mostly still get better over time - now you can get CarPlay instead of the shitty builtin infotainment systems, and even those get more usable. Smart TV

Classic Apple being run by old baby boomers move. Of course everybody in the world is commuting alone by car, why else would you use a car. We’d also all like more U2 forced onto our phones please.

Why do you think they’ll manage to socialize the losses? So far the losses have been very privatized (VC and bank money) and if anything the gains have been socialized (the general public has benefited a lot in the form of taxi-like transpo

Really depends which little corner of the pedal market you’re talking about. In the digital realm I would disagree, there are a lot of really interesting designs from the past 5 years or so. Some of them hide complex dsp algos behind a coup

Based on polling SB-50 had the support of roughly 2/3 of Californians [0]. If we actually decided things democratically like we pretend to we wouldn’t need to worry so much about strong interests coming out against this. The people ben

What you’re advocating for is exactly the status quo that got SF into this mess. “Build X affordable units per Y luxury units” has been the go to line for every shitty NIMBY supervisor for the past 10+ years and we’ve clearly seen all it do

Evil is a little extreme. The drivers are still doing it, so they clearly prefer giving you a ride to not. To add in some more anecdotal stories — the only times I really take a lot of Ubers and talk to the drivers are when traveling, and I

Seems like obvious selection bias. People who sunburn easily (and are thus more susceptible to melanoma) are less likely to take jobs that require working all day in direct sun.

These are good questions, I like how they are phrased so concretely instead just asking “do you have a lot of tech debt?” They’re interesting for getting to know the team and getting a piece of insight you usually wouldn’t have until a few

I think what you're saying is the more common use of "tech debt", basically just using it as a synonym for "bad code". Don't worry about code quality, figure it out later. It ignores the stronger debt analogy -

Everyone that I've talked to about their rental property usually talks about it in terms of just the cash flow though. So yeah, they'll complain about unexpected costs that bring them close to "break even" in many years,

FWIW Credit Karma just sent out an email that they qualify as a credit monitoring service for this purpose. I would guess the kind of person who is paying enough attention and was willing to spend the few minutes it takes to sign up for thi
