It might be interesting to point out that in all the examples you give there exist strong regulatory requirements. Are you (we, collectively) saying that regulations and government oversight should be on the table for web sites that provide

It was used heavily in the fixed income division. I was there during the phase out and among the A-Plus developers there was an "...out of my cold, dead hands" mentality. They (and there were a lot of them) really loved it.

You are correct in most of your points, but it's worth pointing out that for the 25 or 30 years prior to 2007 mortgage defaults did tend to be uncorrelated. During that entire time frame, if you were a trader who chose to insure yourself ag

There's truth in what you say and boomers in general have to take responsibility for having close to zero foresight with respect to how they've squandered their fortunes but let me counter a couple of your points. 1. The vast majority of bo

Since there are a lot of comments that disagree with the post, I'll say that I largely agree with its essential premise which is that a language's perceived difficulty shouldn't be based simply on the initial learning curve, but on how much

Same experience in java. I had to write a java interface to some C++ code. I ended up writing a C wrapper, then interfacing SWIG to that. It made a complex problem very simple.

To talk about the average income in Manhattan is nonsense. Big parts of Manhattan are untouchable by someone making less than several million a year. Other large parts are populated by families dependent on food stamps. There is no "average

Kubrick's films before 2001 (Spartacus, Paths of Glory, etc) tended to tell the story with words and pictures. From 2001 on, with the notable exception of Barry Lyndon, he seemed to become obsessed with imagery, or as you say, creating visu
