Well, if you include the power to get to the modern hardware: no; then you are indebted forever by running Starcraft on emulation. We often discount progress as obvious because we never paid the price of photosynthesis for millions of years

This looks a lot like the thumb ARM thingy? The real question is why? nm: https://www.quora.com/Why-was-the-ARM-Thumb-instruction-set-...

I'm just as OCD about changes as the next competent programmer, but when it comes to say Starcraft, which is a beautiful one person creation (like most software that reaches a large audience for a long time) it now makes me uneasy as t

Even better than finished software is modifiable software; open-source-available minimalist zero-dependency projects that you can fork, fix and compile in 5 minutes.

The "small devices" (gemalto NL vasco US) are/where made in china. Those are probably going "away", at least as we know them. To boil down the problem: To access the western systems you need to keep feeding Apple, G

Only a fool would run Android if they can avoid it, even more so when you get the opportunity to switch architecture and go vanilla linux. The one problem is banking, at least in Sweden we are still dependent on mobile BankID (for online pu

Microservices don't cost as much if you deploy them everywhere so you get both vertical and horizontal scaling without lookup cost. Of course then you need the same stack which allows multiple apps deployed everywhere.

The real problem is IPv4, and IPv6 overshoots. The ports wont be opened ubiquitely. UDP can only do (P2P) punch through and if one person uses the designated port on their IP, the next person to connect gets an elevated port number. It'

Not bad but still east. GCP is Omaha in Iowa. So again what is AWS doing for multiplayer gaming?

The only real reason is GCP has a central US region. How AWS is still stuck at the coasts is beyond me.

Of course it is, safer than drunk humans at least. The problem is not safety, it is what happens after many get killed by machines. And what happens to those inside the machine as it kills someone.

Looking at it now I can tell you this is not what I mean by real-time action. So communication is hard because humans have a tendency to warp things. "1000 player 3D Mario" should paint the picture in your head. I mean action with

Modern laptops are complete garbage. I had a 200X at my last job it was slow (DDR4 is so much slower than DDR3 when in a low power laptop) and the screens are to high res, can't read anything without zooming and then it looks bad. That

For somebody who is used to old IBM ThinkPads (600X and X61s, I stopped moving around after that) this is not an option. The only possible device I would consider using is a JH7110 tablet with bluetooth keyboard and mouse. But it has to be

Then you are making a slideshow, not a game. The whole point of games is real-time action. It does not need to be violent, but it needs physics that give you the feeling of being there. Multiplayer > VR

People expect comments to not be a personal take? Linear things destroy your mind, because you become a passive consumer. Producing is the only meaningful purpose in existence, but not for someone else, for yourself. Now it's too late,

You want low latency action, and for that you need one CPU with all cores talking to all the memory without locking. Erlang can't do that, and neither can any other language; except C (Arrays of 64 byte Structures) and Java (Concurrenc

The real lesson is that the game media/medium does not lend itself to linear stories inherited from TV, that inherited from film, that inherited from theater. Games should only be multiplayer. Real-time action multiplayer. And they sho

Very little, broad stroke RISC ISA was nailed between 6502 and ARM-1 (1975-85), conclusion is 32-bit is enough for eternity. Same with IPv4, just add a byte for the internal mask (/24) and be done with it, long (64-bit) is way overkill

The problem was the smart phone. With that closed platforms became the standard. Non productive hardware is now ubiquitous, most of it can't be fixed. The open risc-v tablet is the only exit from this mess. Forget ARM and X86 empires,
