His view is not just that they are not practical to compute at scale. (They actually are practical to compute. Just not with the formula. Use row reduction instead.) His view is that they are presented as an arbitrary piece of magic that pe

Yes. When I've talked to ex-Microsoft people, they have ways to hook up an external debugger to the halted machine and walk through it. But the necessary tooling only exists at Microsoft.

A lead suit helps. Of course you'd want it to be something like a light year thick. That may be impractical. Plus there are minor structural problems, such as how to stop it from spontaneously collapsing into a black hole.

Let me check what came out in court. https://redmondmag.com/articles/2014/04/28/court-nixes-novel... The case brought to light an Oct. 3, 1994 memo from then-Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, who indicated that

Yes. Defender was legitimately better than the alternatives. In fact no AV at all was better - which is something that I learned from Google's Project Zero.

You work deals for early access to your OS, and work to make your OS backwards compatible. Nobody wants to try to be selling consumer software that is optimized for the out of date and unsupported version of the OS.

Sorry, who is being revisionist here? The use of platform specific code was a performance necessity at the time, everyone did it. Part of the promise of Windows 95 was that it could run your Windows 3.1 programs. They bent over backwards fo

You could, and in fact this is what Microsoft wanted to do. The EU said that they couldn't. And the reason why not is simple. Anything that Microsoft thinks is a good thing to add to the API, they'll add for themselves. When the n

The immediate problem isn't the authenticity of the speaker, it is the perceived authenticity of the speaker. Thanks to overuse, speakers who use those particular phrases won't get perceived as authentic. Which means that they w

If you want to launch another process, might as well launch ps. The challenge here is how to get ps in an environment where the command won't run. And in that case, awk won't run either. As for why it might happen, well just save

The power of git bisect is the best argument that I've seen for using git rebase. When you rebase, you get a much cleaner commit history. Which makes it much easier for git bisect to work and find the correct commit. I still lean agai

The reason why OSM doesn't have it and Google does isn't because Google crowdsources it. It is because Google is straightforward to work with for the companies who provide that data, and OSM is impossible. Yes, there are companies

It is kind of the central point of that idea? As Erin explains in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oYfhTC9lIQ , the question is how much context the speaker can assume that the listener has. In a low context culture, the spe

The two main problems are how to manufacture them at scale, and how durable they are. A thin outer layer on your clothing tends to get fairly rough treatment. Think about sitting down, then scooting your butt back. How much force was that?
