As an engineer directly involved in a company working on one of the biggest mongodb deployments, i also believe that this is crazy because the technology truly sucks outside of a very narrow use case (prototyping, no shard). However they ma

Comparing to mongodb is a joke. However some more advanced strategies should be applied for very large hdfs clusters. The rack aware strategy is actually better than what is described because the probability distribution is not perfectly un

Your values have nothing to do with evidence, reasoning and/or facts. You can change your opinion, increase your knowledge, admit you were wrong about facts but this won't change your values.

What about spending the anti-terror money to make the US "look good" to the people that could be terrorists? That would lower the probability of terrorist attacks. I know this sounds cheesy but I think repression is just making th

Naïve question: why isnt any service on the internet providing sso using kerberos? The protocol seems to be appropriate.

Very cool. We use the "smallest" NIC Mac address at the moment since we generally don't replace NICs much and the dmi info is often bogus. Didn't know about the dbus thing. Will check it out!

You are not identifiable from an ad cookie AFAIK and the country I live in has laws preventing companies to abuse in collecting personal data (like IP address) This is far from being on video. And a lot of places have cameras now in additio

why is that creepy? Both websites are related through a retargeter. One sends the data over to the other. It's just like they were the same websites or same corporation. If you don't like this then you can avoid theses websites that sell/bu

how would you differentiate types of loss? The main issue with TCP over large BDP at the moment is not the limited buffer size IMHO. You can increase is dramatically on modern Linux. You can maybe attempt to work around congestion mechanism

I support this answer. The reality is that outsourcing the devops work is simply moving from IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service, e.g EC2) to PaaS (Platform as a Service, like RDS, Heroku). You just won't deal with infrastructure, servers, ne

.NET tooling can't compete with any unix + ruby tooling. I use .NET everyday I work with NuGet & co and it stinks. It is miles away from being mature and robust (even with VS2012). I was a RoR dev before and loved it, now I just hate .N

We used to do just that, logging as CSV, but switched to JSON. At a certain scale you don't use Unix tool chain anymore except for a tail and that's for pure debugging. We log >10TB per day and they go to Hadoop for processing. JSON is
