Many people, who work in those industries you list as things "you don't need" are without work and health insurance (if they had in the first place). 16 million more people are out of work in the US [0]. Those out of work ca

Honest question: How common is it to have the local funding of schools outside the US? Schools are funded by property taxes. In lots of places this leads to expensive suburbs allocating lots of money to schools and leaving neighboring citie

Using "we" was a bad choice by me. I was trying to say that this is not the natural end of a "slippery slope" of removing hateful/violent videos from YouTube. I don't think this was an inevitability of moderati

I don't think this changes the idea that the slippery slope is a silly argument. Aren't we evaluating these things on their own terms now? It's definitely possible to have a YouTube that is harsh on calls to violence but allo

I think there's a disconnect between what makes someone buy a device, and what makes a quality device. In the abstract I think a lot of people would say they'd take a heavier phone that's more durable and has a longer battery

Understanding is a process. Believing what we have the best evidence to believe is not stupid. If the evidence changes and you shift your belief you are not stupid. I think the reality is that humans are very complex, especially how we rela

Why would anyone use the outside factory? This comes up in the article. The school board had the choice between prison labor and a group hiring former prisoners. They chose prison labor. Why? It was cheaper.

Most plastic is photo-degradable. Left in the sun, it will disintegrate as you saw. [0] Most plastic ends up in a landfill or deep in the water or burred under more plastic where it is not touched by the sun and does not degrade. Plastic on

I admit that eviction situation sounds difficult for landlords. I know I would be frustrated if I was a landlord in that situation. Do you have evidence that the eviction issue is wide-spread enough to cause landlords to prefer AirBnB-ing t

I think it would exist for it's marketed purpose: to let people stay in a city they don't live in for a short period of time (a week or so). I don't think anyone is going to get a lease somewhere just to visit.

Come on... don't let FB off the hook. Don't just stand up and blame "society." Posting violent, hateful, evil stuff is as old as the internet itself. There will always need to be moderators. The question is how these peo

Building an AI is expensive. It also means FB is on the hook for false classifications. This moderator labor is (relatively) cheap. It also allows FB to point to a third party if something goes wrong. Look at their statements in the article

I love NewPipe, it works fantastically. I am nervous that Google will find a way to kill it if it gets big enough. It's not exactly an alternative to YouTube, it's more of a band-aid.
