I included the screen size, because it's a proxy for working distance, and thus pixel density per viewing angle. http://punchingin.com/chasing-the-6-4-megapixel-unicorn/ http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/03/welcome-to-the-post...

How is he "throwing around" this term? He's specifically talking about the iPad 3. Apple uses this marketing term to signal to the purchaser that they are going to get a certain pixel density. I see retina display, I know I will get a "g

This is a very cool idea and I definitely see the problem that it solves, but it also has the downside of not being a metaphor for something physical. It's a little strange to see these controls which are currently very anchored in the corn

Windows 8 is not an over-the-air type of automatic update. It's something a user decides to go to buy and install. This is the type of thing where you _do_ want it to look at least a little different, otherwise the user will have the feel

Getting off-topic (although, I think we're already there)- I have been finding HN discussions harder to navigate lately. I still miss seeing the post voting scores. I don't remember if how the comment thread display has changed, but it's g

Coke outsells Pepsi in most areas of the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepsi#Rivalry_with_Coca-Cola I think some people might have a misconception that Pepsi does better due to the very popular Pepsi Challenge marketing campaign. But

Maybe not what the gp meant, but 20-80 lbs might make you better equipped. 10 years of "wisdom" hopefully helps too.

There's a 3 gig plan for $30 and he's being throttled at 2.1G. I think he makes a good point. Are 3 gig plan users also being throttled when they hit the "top 5%"?

Check out this series by Matt Bowen: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Inside-the-playbook.html... A number of posts have diagrams as well as a video. Some of the older posts point to videos that are broken now, but I was able to find

A bigger problem for me is not the visual separation, but that there are functional, but invisible, frames in the layout. The header doesn't scroll, while the left sidebar and the main content scroll separately. So, in the middle of the w

Um, yeah, I don't think we're going from broadcast/cable we have now to something like the web sites with RSS feeds. If by standardization, you mean open standard, that's not happening.

Standardization comes from the framework. Just like apps (mostly) have similar button elements, tab views, etc. "Channel apps" can also have similar UI elements, the same way to go back to "home", there can be a unified way to switch chann

I'm a camera newbie, but I see: 1. Shallow depth of field (close objects in focus, far objects out of focus). Doesn't necessarily mean poor quality, but webcams have wide DOF, so you might associate shallow DOF with good quality 2. JPEG co

He's calculating the cost of commuting vs not commuting. That's not a real comparison for most people. And even if you do calculate the real cost differential, I think for many people, living somewhere you really like is similar to taking

Thanks for this extension. A suggestion- I understand what you're trying to convey with the point range, but for usability I'd prefer always seeing one number there. I don't mind a best guess and marking the score as an approximate number.

Agreed, it's bandwidth and the duration. In our household, we watch many 20-40 minute shows in a day. Probably a total of 2-10 hours depending on the day. We also watch lots of youtube videos, but it's 1-5 minute videos which amount to a

Light switches are just as confusing initially- why is up on and down off? Once the convention is established, it becomes more natural. Plus, since the action is a toggle, it matters less which is which. For the most part I don't care if

This series is breathtaking. I don't think I've experienced anything beyond what beer does- this is a fascinating experiment to see from the first frame to the last. Thanks for the link.
