I have now subscribed! What ideas you thinking about for your next pieces? And what are your goals if you don't mind me asking, I mean I don't see any obvious monetization stuff on your site? If you get 10m views a month does that

Agreed. There's a real art in promoting yourself without resulting in everyone hating you. Not everyone manages that - or even tries to avoid the "annoying one's peers" part. In business unlike socially it's actuall

You might call it "tongue in cheek" in the UK, a statement made with no pretense that it's true, with a gently humorous intent.

Hi less_penguiny - absolutely loved this article . Brilliant writing. I'm also finding myself thinking a lot about social interactions, especially the dumb nonsense vast swathes of our populations carry out, and being currently in the

It's one of the UK's leading broadsheets with nigh on 200 years behind it. Reasonable and valid complaints about mainstream media aside, this is about as legit as it gets!

You forget perhaps that we HN folk are not typical. What you describe is not widely accepted, not by a long way. To most users FB is absolutely a pure(ish) content exchange medium. They treat posting like sending SMS or what have you, an

But that is a problem that's my point. They sell themselves as allowing us to 'connect' - bless their kind selfless hearts - then filter, prioritize, and suppress what we choose to connect with. At this stage 'private co

I've increasingly felt that fb, twitter etc with their filters and algorithms are more publisher than platform. They indisputably go to great lengths to control what you see ergo they are not simply facilitators.

Whether malice or incompetence the key thing is that it's blocking a legit post with no recourse . That's a serious problem given that it's such a core sharing platform for so many people.

I agree, what you describe provides an opportunity to solve problems - far from useless! Certainly there's judgement needed in terms of where something becomes too detailed or digresses too far but that comes down to practice and intui

Just to make this even more tricky - please be aware of the small but significant segment of your readers who are likely colourblind to some extent! I have quite severe red/green difficulties and it renders many visualisations useless.

Agree; being a good team player, someone folks want to work with, counts for a hell of lot, IMO. Too many devs, young and old, are oblivious to this. Humility, a sense of humour, and being generous with credit are all great traits to help

Exactly - traditional advertising has long been about product and brand awareness and giving people the warm fuzzies about their logos, slogans, imagery etc. Treat online as exactly that with clickthroughs as a bonus !

Targeted advertising has become such a big deal, and implemented at such high cost, that I wonder if the trade off is even worth it now. I could imagine Apple or Samsung simply "sponsoring" Facebook for a week or month at a time w

In maybe 3 or 4 cities worldwide, sure, you might be right. That leaves plenty locations where $80 per hour is insanely well paid. And most folks live in those other locations - including some top-3% experts!
