I had the same issue with them back when I was a user. If you find any broken !bangs at Jive Search feel free to submit a pull request.

You can make the ranking configurable. Once we get our own index built we will go back to doing this. The way we used to do it was by having a PostgreSQL function that is customizable once you get everything set up...I'm sure there are

I run https://jivesearch.com , so I might be biased. The single biggest thing they can do to improve their product is open source everything. They've instead decided to move away from that by freezing their instant answers w

I can vouch for that. We recently made a big improvement to our search results at Jive Search and have seen better traffic. People will set it as their default more if it's better.

The !bangs aren't too hard to implement. It's basically just a very large config file. You can see that in our code: https://github.com/jivesearch/jivesearch . I run the project, btw. And, yes, we have that sa

Beyond what you pointed out, it's hard to really know what's going on with something closed source. Disclosure: I run jivesearch.com (basically, an open source version of DDG). FYI, we've got an open issue on GitHub to add PO

Fair point. I just added it. I noticed they don't have a Jive Search !bang ;).

Another option to self host is https://jivesearch.com/ . Has !bangs and instant answers, etc. I run it and am happy to answer any questions.

https://jivesearch.com/ . I run it and made an update this week that greatly improved our search results. 100% open source, has all the !bangs and tons of instant answers.

I'm with you! I've been developing https://jivesearch.com/ , which is basically an open source version of DDG. Has all the !bangs and tons of instant answers. The best part is that if you are paranoid about privacy

I am developing https://jivesearch.com/ , which is basically an open source version of DDG. We've got that right underneath the search results. Defaults to !g, !b, !a, and !yt but you can change it to whatever !bangs yo

That's kind of how I feel about DDG but am concerned that they don't offer the privacy they promise since they aren't open source and are hosted on AWS. Feel free to try something I created....jivesearch.com. You can get all

In other words, they have 30 days to erase your data. So, they can keep customer data for 29 days, sell it and then be in "compliance".

And how do you know they don't track you? I have a problem with anyone that isn't willing to open source their code.

I agree and don't like the proprietary nature of DDG and others. YaCy has no !bangs, no instant answers and you have to install it. I've made an open source version of DDG with !bangs, instant answers, etc. We are hosted on Digita

Shameless plug: I've tried DDG in the past and didn't like that they weren't completely open source. I've been developing https://jivesearch.com and it is similar to DDG with all the !bangs and tons of instan

I just got done on the first stages of a maps instant answer for Jive Search using Mapbox and think it's coming along very well. Still have a lot to do in terms of adding directions and triggering the answer with the name of a city, et

What's the alternative? As others have pointed out the results as they stand aren't that good and, as you point out, other search engines have their own incentives to push stuff to the top. Since the scoring system can be customiz

My reputation? None, really. My background is in finance and I'm a self-taught developer. Just tired of not having anything I like. If you don't trust me you can run it on your own server.

I've considered that but didn't really know anything about the organization and how long they'll be around. We're gonna give Colly a try: https://github.com/gocolly/colly .

Advertising that doesn't track users. Perhaps a freemium model for API usage with a very generous free tier.

The voting reorders the search results. https://www.jivesearch.com/ . You will need Elasticsearch, Redis, PostgreSQL as well as run the Wikipedia & MusicBrainz dumps. Let me know if you run into any issues.

Yeah, that's what I meant...wish I could edit the title. EDIT: I'm not going to edit the landing page as not all users know what reddit is. The HN community knows reddit but post title could clearly be better.
