Can I just take a moment to say how much I appreciate Hacker News? In an internet filled with advertising, tracking, toxicity and trolls, HN is a relief. The design is simple, fast and functional. The community does a tremendous job of legi

“Cartographer” was replaced by “Geospatial data scientist” or the like. There is little market left for purely drawing maps. That is now just an expected skill among those in the field of GIS.

Not to defend Amazon here, but if the market demands cheaper products, which necessitates a ton of labor, and laborers are being overworked... Doesn’t replacing them with robots actually sound like a viable solution? The market demands this

I’m not sure I understand where you’re coming from... Even if not absolute, there is certainly more choice in pursuing a PhD than getting an STD. Maybe someone experiences pressure to pursue a PhD (I have to some extent) but the end choice

As someone currently contemplating pursuing a PhD and working in the Public Health space, I don’t like this author’s take. Sure, many PhD students report a high burden of stress, but comparing this to the general population is a poor assump

Serious question: Who is going to accept Kong as a valid form of payment? What incentive is there to accept Kong and what guarantees its value? One of the biggest issues plaguing cryptocurrency as a transactional currency is the volatility

Maybe I misunderstood, do you only pay for the tiles on mapbox? I’m just accustomed to having to use a restricted api key with mapbox. If that’s the case I’m totally ditching maptalks for all it’s quirks. And I don’t know of any libraries f

You can style the tiles or use your own. Where did you find the $1000 quote? I know you can have them hosted unlimited for $245/month but I was fairly sure it was free for self-hosted use.

If you can find the time to set it up, OpenMapTiles [0] is the way to go. In the long run, you’ll probably save more money than the time it takes to manage. [0] https://openmaptiles.org/

Well, I think it has better (official) WebGL support than leaflet, but most all the developers I know are jumping to Mapbox by default. EDIT: My favorite open source library right now is maptalks. Basically mapbox sort of functionality and

On 11/13 they promised to be preparing to start deliveries on 12/15. If at this point they had not made an effort to reach this goal (placing an order with the manufacturer for example), that is a misrepresentation of fact. Fraud

An LLC does not protect one in cases of fraud. IANAL, but I believe the practices of Unicorn may constitute fraud under a legal definition. In such a case, Nick Evans would be personally liable for damages.

If you give $700 to a company that promises to deliver a scooter, and they spend that money on advertising, that’s fraud. They have no plausible argument that they didn’t know they couldn’t deliver or refund customers after they started spe

Not OP, but I think the point here is that very few end users have a say in the tools they use. You sell the big company on your software, one or a few elites like it, and they buy thousands of licenses for all of their employees.
