Robert Sapolsky is a genius. His work relating psycho-social phenomena to physiology is profound. Other thinkers in the realm (albeit different expertise) are Gabor Mate and Stephen Porges. I think there’s a natural inclination for any spec

I agree with your overall sentiment, but want to expand on a few points. Housing: It seems this is largely a policy issue rather than an economic one. Restrictive zoning and a misaligned incentive structure come to mind. Places like SF are

Green text, black background. I’ll open a terminal in my university courses and take notes in vim just to see people’s reactions. Even better, doing anything with a lot of stdout. Fast scrolling text in a terminal freaks out a lot of people

The disadvantage there is that sometimes you want to give the user a totally different site if their client is mobile. CSS queries are indiscriminate in that a smaller browser window may trigger the “mobile” css. Likewise, many tablets have

Sometimes I find it hard to justify all the time I spend on HN. But discovering FastAPI is probably going to compensate for plenty of this time. This is a really awesome library, thanks!

That would make sense. Probably the number 100ish spot got replaced by a much larger package. My initial thought was a widespread security patch or something.

You are correct about Uber not being profitable. They’re burning cash quickly. And if you look at market performance, they’re not where they expected to be. Furthermore, they’re fighting things like employee unionization (See California) wh

Here are some estimates: https://oversharing.substack.com/p/shared-scooters-dont-last... These scooters are already at a fairly decent economy of production. Chinese factories are producing these in the thousands and c

You’re right about that value add, but it’s probably not a value add for anyone using an electric scooter as a daily means of transportation. One of the biggest detractors is that you could ride a scooter to work and when you go to leave, r

Does anyone actually think this is a profitable market? Electric scooters are expensive, repair and charging is expensive. It’s a seasonal business. Vandalism/abuse is fairly common. In terms of any environmental benefit, I highly susp

Sarcasm? The vast majority of gig-jobs are driving. Ride share and delivery make up the obvious lion’s share of gig work.

I’ll try to do the math here. Assuming the following: Cost to buy: $500 Cost to charge $0.40/day (maybe generous) Cost to Rent: $2/day Rental Mileage: $0.15/min Assume 10mph average, (10 miles/day) $9/day Total: $11

Can anyone here comment on actually using a Comma product? I don’t even drive a car, but I don’t see why anyone would buy something like this yet. My point being that it’s not full self driving, and frankly its safety is entirely questionab

Duo is awesome. I discovered it because it’s the system my employer uses for 2FA and push notifications are so much nicer than having to enter codes. But similarly, I’ve found it convenient for all my other 2FA needs from GitHub to RuneScap

As a very frequent R user, I actually find non-standard evaluation to be more hassle than good in most situations. If you want to program with most of the tidyverse libraries, you are forced to implement a bunch of non-sense into your funct

Maybe just my interpretation, but I find these lessons to apply very closely to technology in popular culture. The idea that there is no objective way to observe culture, that complexity obscures analysis , and that individuals will analyze

When you say educational market do you mean primary/secondary? The three largest universities in my city recently moved from GSuite to Microsoft’s stack.

Oh, I meant more about data analysis. Typically you don’t import raster tiles unless we’re talking about imagery. But as far as like roads and boundaries, you should always work with the raw vectors.

Ah, I haven’t really got into that territory with mapnik. But to the second point, yes you should just generate a bunch of Raster tiles. And before doing this, ask yourself if you really need to. If this isn’t a huge project, Mapbox is an e

I’ve only used the Python library, and I think I survived. I only used it for some visualization however. And I’m still unclear. Are you trying to serve these tiles to another application? Or are you trying to make a digital/print map?

I’ll try my best to explain the process. The data comes from places like the Census Bureau (roads, place names) and then a lot of it has to be collected by the like of OpenStreetMap/Google/Other Providers. (GIS Data is big busines

Are you trying to render a static map or make something interactive? If this is static, Mapnik is a good call. It has some extra anti-aliasing under the hood and it’s exceptionally fast.

I have the same sentiment on ESRI. It’s basically all I got taught in my university courses, but it’s not what I ever want to use. It’s crazy that a privately held company holds like a third of the market share. And personally, I don’t thin

I was going to make a quip about how you would probably fare worse in China, but at least according to Wikipedia, the penalty is 10-15 days [0]. On the other hand, legalization is probably imminent in the US. The same is not true of China.

A few good takes, but China becoming the dominant global power? Not a good take. China is fairly good at a few things, namely lending money and manufacturing goods. What they aren’t good at is making people happy. See Hong Kong for the last
