Its a result of trigrams themselves. For example turning searchcode (please ignore plug, this is just the example I had to hand) goes from 1 thing you would need to index into 8. "searchcode" -> [sea, ear, arc, rch, chc

Yes, although the lack of detail about the sparse grams is frustrating.

You could, but I don't know what you gain out of it. The underlying index would be almost the same size, and n-gram would also allow you to search for e.t for example which you are losing in this process.

Code search is indeed hard. Stop words, stemming and such do rule out most off the shelf indexing solutions but you can usually turn them off. You can even get around the splitting issues of things like a.toString() With some pre-p

I actually half wrote a RFC of a spec and 2 implementations of a federated search last year. Rather than do the disturbed hash table that yacy does. I wanted results to be re-rankable by the peers by sharing the scores that went into them.

In China it is/was. Its very expensive for the average Chinese person and is considered fairly fancy or upscale. At least it was when I lived there. Same rule applies to Pizza Hut.

Can confirm this book is excellent. It's one I point people at all the time when they ask me why something isn't working as expected in any standard search tool, and something I reference from time to time to refresh my own knowle

Just had all my connections cancelled. So extra day in San Fran for me which is less than ideal, but probably better than being on the flight if something happens. It was total bedlam at the airport when I got in this morning however. With

I don't think this would be practical for a static site. You still need to maintain a list of followers of your account somewhere and that needs to be dynamic if you want it to work the way people expect it to where they follow you fro

We had a big year for them in 2021 in Australia. I was testing an Apple Watch at the time and since exercise was one of the reasons at that time to be allowed out I went for bush walks in my local area. In quite a few areas the noise was so

That’s one of the reasons I made this actually https://github.com/boyter/cs I wanted and boolean syntax mixed with fzf instant search. It’s not as fast as ripgrep of course but it’s not solving the same problem.

I used RabbitMQ for a while and nothing but problems. Admittedly I probably shouldn't have used it the way I did. I dumped many millions of tasks into it, then fanned out processes pulling from that queue that took a variable amount of

I wonder if there should be a website like busfactorone.com that lists projects maintained by one person to assist with surfacing this. It could be it’s resolved though funding them, or getting more people across it. Anything to help mitiga

Have been working on a project which allows you to check if any of your source code has been copied from major online projects (over 70 billion lines of code) and report back if duplicates have been found. You can control the length of the

Saving fuel seems highly likely to me. My understanding is that's the cause of the additional turbulence you see these days, since they glide into land rather than stepping down to avoid turbulence. I think they also have planes more t

You aren’t missing anything. I don’t have the paper handy but I had the same question and found a study showing that a salt worked fine. I’m just glad im not the only one to wonder this. Perhaps that’s the issue. It feels wrong for some rea

Let me rephrase. I don’t think the current iteration of Mastodon can scale well enough no matter what hardware you throw at it. It’s not designed for it. You would need to build a new system to achieve what was proposed. I suspect that the

Which is what mastodon already does. It has extended the ActivityPub protocol in a few places. Everyone copies because you must work against Mastodon to really participate.

Correct. A lot of the protections in ActivityPub are listed in the spec as "should" not "must". For example edits and deletes. I think it should be assumed that when you publish content over activitypub it is now public.

I totally agree. Using a protocol designed to distribute content with the expectation that you remain in control of it is asinine. If you really want to control it, either allow list federate with only instances you know are in the same cir
