Thanks again! I’ll consider this settled: people prefer Ken Liu, but that’s not why the second book was different :).

Even still, there is no sales tax rate that ends up charging wealthy people anything meaningful. Roughly speaking, the savings rate of wealthy people is so high (and therefore 1-that as spending rate) and everyone else basically spends all

I think this thread is conflating election contributions/outcomes with lobbying. The main point of lobbying is not in the direct, (historically) small campaign contributions but in the large staff of lobbyists who spend time with congr

Thanks! I don't think the political correctness or other changes would have really bothered me, it was much more about structure. IIRC, there were some "chapters" in Dark Forest that were... over an hour? In Chinese, does the

If there's anyone out there that has read the trilogy in both the original Mandarin as well as the English translations, I'd love to get their take on the effect of translation. If I remember correctly, I found The Three Body Prob

Great write up! I’m amused by your subdivision of space note, given Figure 1 :). There are clearly some problems and transforms that are better on N-spheres (N-balls?) and others on rectangles / N-cubes. Do you have a deeper intuition

Do you mean on GKE or directly on GCE? It sounds like you mean GKE (“failed to unregister from cluster”). We’re looking to fix up the GKE graceful node shutdown, because it’s currently “racy” and doesn’t actually respect the grace period pr

I didn’t know about this anecdote before, but apparently Alan Krueger of minimum wage study fame had an interesting follow up: shouldn’t the federal minimum wage be too high somewhere? What about Puerto Rico? Apparently, he didn’t find evid

Good point, I updated my comment with an edit: Healthy SF isn’t mandated, providing health care is (and the very limited Healthy SF coverage is basically the cheapest option, so most restaurants do that). On the “dictated by statute”, I act

I forgot they said that (I read this when it was posted a couple days ago), thanks for noting that. But I still would encourage even a 1s “clean” shutdown. You don’t need to wait for any of this fancy cleanup, but it’s really nice to finish

To be clear, in California the tipped minimum wage is at least $13/hr state wide (and $14/hr for businesses with 25 employees or more). I believe in San Francisco, it’s also just strictly the same as minimum wage of $16.07/hr

You still want to send SIGTERM or equivalent to the processes so that they can flush their state if needed. Just abandoning ship is often less good than using a few seconds to cleanly shut down (if only to exit and send a clear message that

Ahh the memories of dealing with Itanium for our large SGI boxes. It was super awesome to have a single system multi terabyte memory “machine” in 2005. It was not awesome to keep adjusting out code to be more amenable to the VLIW-like needs
