In this situation, NZ has unique geographical advantages. Others that have tried similar measures without those advantages haven't found the same success. I think most European and North American nations recognized very early on that N

> But the reason this is lasting so long... Masks and social distancing and banning birthday parties are not about speeding up or ending the pandemic but slowing it down (to minimize deaths) until a vaccine is ready. This is what 'f

If a gig worker reguarly goes to multiple grocery stores (which is pretty common, moreso than for individual shoppers), there might not be much benefit for grocery store workers. The ability to transfer disease between grocery stores might

It certainly reduces risk for the clients, but also increases risk for the gig worker. It might reduce societal risk overall, though I'd argue it's hard to say without a deeper understanding of overall behavior, especially since p

If you order through e.g. instacart somebody usually still has to make an in-person trip to the store and take things off shelves. It's the same vector, but you are paying someone else to be exposed to it. It's not necessarily tru

There's truth to this, but I don't think it's the whole picture. It's certainly possible to be concerned about the state of civilization without "doomscrolling" or checking covid death numbers each morning. The

Some of my family members work(ed) at a south-side Chicago hospital that treats mainly low-income black people. The hospital is shutting down because of the pandemic (or at least using it as an excuse to get out of a low-value market). The

I don't see the relevance of this comment. If you can't get approval from the authorities for your disability, then you end up in the same place. One path just involves more paperwork, paternalism, and shame. Anyway, I'm pret

I don't feel it's dismissive at all. Yeah "rules of thumb" and correlational studies are imperfect, but I think they are better than nothing. It's usually easier to break out of a feedback loop once you recognize th

If you somehow managed to convince a group of people to stare at a glowing white rectangle for 10 hours day, I would be pretty surprised if you couldn't notice any mental health effects.

For people with 'untreatable' or 'psychogenic' chronic illnesses, universal healthcare would just mean a different institution denies your claim for treatment. Progressives, especially in 2020, don't look kindly on

I don't care what Lightfoot looks like, I don't understand how you can watch a deeply segregated city attempt to isolate its poorest residents from its richest areas, even temporarily, and not see a problem.

I agree that the river is in many senses a symbolic boundary, but I think its symbolism is important, especially in the near vicinity of the Loop. And while property crime and violent crime are separate to a degree, I think the city's
