That's really not true for the type of game the OP is talking about. Think Second Life et al, where most of the content is dynamically streamed and rendered in real time

Your comment made me understand why HN generally moderates/opts out of highly political topics.

It is absolutely a tax. The "cost" you pay upfront, the hundred dollar annual membership cost. Though even that could be considered a tax and not a "cost", because without it you can't even write software and deploy

I for one would never trade my Windows (or Linux w/ KDE) for the atrocity that is the macOS UX :)

Right but that would only happen if the code literally increased/decreased the channel volume instead of simply setting it to the new value. Either way it's an embarrassing bug to have for something so essential and simple, the ki

It precedes the switch to ARM. My 2019 (last Intel generation) MBP also had this issue. And the previous one from 2015 (though that poor thing only had 8GB of RAM).

I cannot believe that, on macOS, high cpu usage leads to audio buffer underruns and popping, like something from the 90s but on today's premium hardware. It's inexcusable. On a platform that is constantly touted as the best for au

And, of course, all this is done under the guise of "security" or "protecting privacy" and the users are cheering for it. You never know when a 3rd party company is going to place a digital time bomb _somehow_ by putting

It's only stupid if it results in some kind of consequences. If not, then they are just flexing, and they seem fairly confident that there won't be any significant consequences for this kind of behavior. Whether that's true,

Maybe they should. Because that's exactly the kind of attitude that they're enforcing upon their developers. Instead, they want to have it both ways, "my way or the highway" when it comes to the App Store rules and monet

Oh right, Apple removed USB-A for the betterment of the world. Just like Apple removed HDD support and that's why we all use SSDs now. Or how they removed DVD-ROM and that's why we use portable flash memory. And PS/2 peripher

That's just typical for Apple at this point. Wonder how that's even legal. Do consumer protection laws simply not exist anymore?

Except, of course, it's not about using it too early, it's about getting rid of what EVERYONE at that point used (USB-A) too early. So they could shave off a few mm of the laptop body as if it were a designer bag and not a device

Why? Do you consider Apple to generally be some sort of force of good? I find Apple to be an incredibly cynical company. They are cynical towards their users (donglebook back when USB-c was hardly adopted, the whole "you're holdin

I think it's just honesty. You don't have to pretend that the bad a person did ("bad" being defined by your own perspective, of course) didn't exist in order to celebrate the good. I think the article author managed

I didn't get that vibe from reading the post at all. On the contrary, I perceive it as a celebration of the person who had invested so much of their (unfortunately ultimately limited) time to their common cause.

Thanks for posting this article. As expected, this article tells a much deeper story than the reductionist retort made by the parent poster. A very interesting one, too.

I cannot disagree more on just about everything you wrote. In my experience, Xcode has been terrible, sometimes borderline unusable. The horrible project format, merging pains when working in a team, interface builder being trash in general

Say what you want against Gradle, but that method of project/workspace configuration is miles, no, lightyears ahead of the dumpster fire that is the xcodeproj format, especially when working in a team.

Apple can get away with this because it doesn't (directly) affect their users, only the developers. Even with all the racketeering, the developers don't really have a choice; choosing to leave the Apple platform and their racketee
