Oh no, it does matter a lot. Would you want to grow up in a cartoon world with Google execs owning all they keys to your reality? Believe me, it matters for Google and other big tech who create this layer of abstraction between the reality

Oh yeah, those kids don't understand the concept of a file, or where and how it is actually stored, or what the file format represents, or that they can even change anything. They don't care about storage, as everything is intangi

Take a read here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11528-021-00599-4 Not specifically related to Google, but we are making our kids write less, which literally dumbs them down: https://www.fro

We didn't have any tech in school and yet we've turned out just fine, now sitting here and typing this on HN. I'm all for banning tech from schools. Allowing Google to enter the school system has been a crime against our chil

The mention of planet's "installation," in the abstract and repeatedly throughout the article, I have found very confusing. The reference to Kopparapu et al. (2013) has no mention of the term whatsoever. I have found a mentio

Yeah, this covers my feeling pretty well. Just navigating the Control Panel in Windows 10 and, especially, 11, is an exercise in sadomasochism. I think 7 was the last sane version for me. Generally, the feeling is that you no longer own you

After 5 years running FreeBSD and Xfce on my laptop I cannot imagine using anything else. I have a few Windows machines in the house and I am always flabbergasted how slow, ad-ridden and convoluted they are. To each his own, of course, but

That's it. Google is loosing the ground here. It is no longer "the gateway to the Internet." There has always been dog shit, it's just there will now be much more dog shit than ever. Indexing dog shit is not working anym

Coming from ZX Spectrum at home and seeing the beauty of Turbo Pascal on an IBM PC-compatible has greatly contributed to my love of programming. R.I.P., Professor Wirth.

Is this one of the oldest WMs still in development for Unices? I remember I ran Enlightenment on my Pentium 133 MHz Linux box to get those cool aliens hanging from my windows. Feels like the version numbering isn't much different from

And I agree with that. What I don't agree with is that this knowledge should be disseminated in the way it is done on that billboard, with a bunch of people shown having great fun. That is promoting drug use. That sends the wrong messa

That billboard and "harm reductionists" is destigmatizing, not decriminalizing. I also think the possession of some subset of drugs should remain a criminal offense. Decriminalizing heroin and fentanyl doesn't sound like a go

Sir, this is incredible. Really enjoyed the photos/videos section and the way the computer is so neatly laid out. Mind-blowing amount of effort. I wish I would be able to see this live in a university.

It's a design issue, not a tunnel size issue. Look at all these interior details, not to mention a completely identical exterior. It's the rolling stock from the freaking past. Obviously there were so many cost-cutting measures (o

I was amazed how well underground trains accelerate in Amsterdam and Munich. Also, how pleasant they are, and the interior design pleasantly fresh, with good amount of space and good-sized windows. That tube stock we have from the 70s looks

I have a collection of retro stuff from my childhood - an XT, a 386DX-40, Pentium-133, a bunch of hard drives, motherboards, video and sound cards, and so on... I really love all this retro stuff. But one night on eBay I've stumbled up
