After working for ~2.5 years on the web stack, I've spent the better part of the last year working purely in C++, and I can agree with the author's sentiment here. Both languages have warts, but JS is a small enough language (at l

A copy of Frontpage in middle school is what got me in to programming, back in the day. One of my earliest memories of 'coding' (It seems silly to call it that now, but hey, I was 13!) was opening the generated html files to remov

This just seems too black and white for the current environment, though. A seed stage startup? Sure. But if Uber made you an offer tomorrow, would it really be prudent to value the equity at $0?

It's more than just overhead - going public forces you to think in terms of quarterly earnings reports. It's very hard for a tech company to thrive in that kind of environment - capital expenditures required to develop new product

Those cities are becoming great places to live, but if you work in tech the opportunities in the bay area still dwarf everything else. Some industries are very centralized in one city - tech in the bay area, finance in NYC, entertainment in

I think the key differentiator between successful "uber for X" companies and unsuccessful ones will end up being the customer experience in the industry each company attacks. Before uber, getting a taxi sucked . Talked to anyone

I'd gladly pay this amount too, if it meant I got all college football and NFL games. A one stop shop for all games would be a huge convenience, too. When my favorite college team is playing early season games, sometimes it's a

not sure if you meant "car miles" when you said sales, but another point: * Cars are way more reliable than even 10-15 years ago. Growing up my parents had a rule of thumb that a car was a ticking bomb over 100k miles. Today, a

Cars are pretty much a requirement in a rural area like that. But on the plus side, cars are a lot easier to own in those areas. Parking is usually free/cheap. Traffic is very low, etc.

In the parts of the US discussed in this thread - there really isn't a rainy season. They get moisture pretty much year round - snow in the winter, rain in the summer. So more frequent gradings are needed if the traffic is heavy enough

Just like with features - explicitness vs conciseness is a tradeoff language designers have to walk. I feel like, in general, the C# team does a great job balancing things.
