Writing software for old systems can sometimes be frustrating, but mostly it is SO nice. The target was usually quite simple and you don't have to deal with all the extra obstacles and choices that are obligatory today when running sof

That makes me think about reading djb's c code. He zealously checks return values. Even from printf.

Unless you have deterministic threading no parallel GC will be deterministic. A lot of software has used the Boehm collector without issue, like inkscape and I believe crystal lang. It is not sexy, and it has other issues, but it has worked

My first experience was the purchase. There was a choice between downloading or getting an SD card. I had a bunch of SD cards so I thought a download would be fine. Except it wasn't a download. It was "download our windows/Ma

I have had so many issues with usb c audio. Disconnection, bad contact, broken connectors. They break all the time. 3.5 or die. I have bought Motorola phones the last 3 phones I have had. They are great.

I still wish I had pirated software several times a year. Last it was Garmin stuff. I will never buy anything Garmin ever again. It was a Kafkaesque experience. The list of banned companies is starting to get prohibitively long.

Jeez, I just read about him. Was he the first who went down the alt right pipeline? What happened there? From goatse security to the Daily Stormer.

I am pretty sure it is the opposite. I used antigen tests which are less reliable. I did not mean to confirm the parent, but give a version that is similar but probably just chance.

So, another anecdote: I have COVID right now. I have had a bunch of self tests at home, and have tested myself every single time I have had any kind of cold or fever. Despite me getting on a crammed bus every morning and afternoon to go wor

It is one of the reasons I agreed to get pets. Kids growing up in households with pets have fewer allergies. I wasn't prepared for how much I'd fall in love with him though. Some of my fondest memories are of my son playing with o

Nice to read this. I was taught finale when I was in school in the early 00s. I went on to study music (as a performer) and my notational needs were covered by writing by hand or by lilypond). I never though anything would actually threate

I think there is something to sitting down to stare at a macro until you understand how it works. I remember the first time I understood how cut worked. It was a revelation that led me to writing more and more monstrous syntax-rules macros

One might think this is just pointless, but I have actually seen (and written) macros using techniques by Oleg. Alex Shinn (of Chibi scheme fame) has mastered them all I think.

There are lots of examples of non-composable transformations. Two functions are not necessarily composable. Call/cc does not compose with the current continuation, whereas delimited continuations do. Algorithmic transformations are alg

Sure. But in that case it is somewhere between map(car)-and-friends and LOOP. Which is a situation where they add very little. Being able to use them as an intermediate step wherever data flows is probably the only place I use them myself.

Transducers are not loops. You can create transducers and pass them as arguments to functions, that in their turn can prepend or append then. They are composable algorithmic transformations.

They are not similar at all, except that they might overlap. Transducers are functions that perform one-way transformations of data. Srfi-42 is couple of loop macros. I wrote both srfi-171 (mentioned in the post) and this looping macro htt
