I suspect only the apple laptops. It was a pain for me to find an arm64 build of linux that'd run in normal vm software for example. Most were compiled for particular SBCs. Pretty much was left with only debian & opensuse. So I agr

I suspect the short answer is "no", and the long answer is "if battery life is good enough who will care?" My amd laptop from 3 years ago varies from 5-10 hours depending on workload. Compared to my mac its usually half

But as you point out, apple does have fans and in the m-series laptops they're done in such a way that they're nearly silent, or off. So, they really do not contribute meaningfully to noise, energy, or failure. They help with the

ALL interfaces are learned, CLI or UI makes no difference. What's intuitive is how much previously learned interactions are reusable. This is a big reason why macos sucks for example - it does everything its own way. The keyboard, the

I've been telling others much the same, but additionally: - You can see debian's maturity even in the ARM landscape. Out of all the distros that are compiled for ARM64, I could only get 2 (debian and opensuse) to run in the contex

There's nothing unfair about fans. They're not new technology and apple is allowed to use them too. And they do, in a way that is barely noticeable. If you do it right it's fine.

You can't just dismiss it as being invalid because it is 4 years old. I counted 9 of the 15 items as still present issues on current macbooks. Most of the things not solved are design decisions. It's not like people needed more ev

I know, I've nearly forgotten all compatibility woes! When I made my linux vm, I actually just took a real linux system's drive and told vmware to just use the drive as-is. So, it was really convenient to no longer have to deal wi

Sadly, vmware, which scares me now that broadcom owns it. It's had the best balance of seamless + good-enough graphics performance (for media, not games) My personal rank is vmware virtualbox qemu I never tried hyper-v by itself. vmwa

When elite dangerous was new I asked a friend if they wanted to join me in playing it. They said no, they were waiting for star citizen (why either-or?) Anyway, that was 2 US presidents ago. Still waiting huh?

Windows host, because I play VR games and GPU passthrough would be inconvenient. I just fullscreen the linux VM and it feels native for all the non-3D tasks I do with it. Even media viewing is a breeze.

I feel the author's grief over lack of time, but it has lead me to very different solutions. All around the idea of the OS should not interrupt, should not change rapidly, and my interaction with programs should not be much different f

Most laptops are bad intentionally. Less effort, more profit, and replaced sooner. But that's not to say good non-mac laptops dont exist, nor that mac laptops are the best. I currently have an m1 mbp and an asus zephyrus g14 They'

For sure the author is missing the point, but that doesn't mean macOS is normal. By most definitions normal in the consumer, non-mobile space would be whatever Windows does. And, there's things Linux & macOS share in common (u

I've learned it's rather irrelevant whether macOS could become better by being more like other platforms. Because there's enough of the users who will defend obviously bad UX, and I guess apple doesn't do UX studies that

webp is perfect for serving images but not perfect as a source. jpeg at 100% quality is less lossy than webp lossy version. webp lossless is fine, but then not very small. taking photos at 100% jpeg can be a good middle ground for that reas
